Hi tamarindBrenda,
OIC
The next show plan to watch: 射雕英雄传
 -
Brenda, Tamarind
would you recommend the versions you are watching for 7 and 5 year olds? pref with english subs. The idea is to get them used to listening to the language and enjoying it, more than learning anything concrete at the moment.
I learnt a lot of my chinese as a kid, watching all the ‘dubbed’ HK TVB drama serials as my parents can’t speak or understand chinese.
Thanks -

I love 射雕英雄传 .I remember during my time, I will rent all the VCD and chase after the series and so hooked into it.
I remember at one point of time, the TV chanel was showing it but was the newer version, and I din enjoy it that much.
Happy watching...
cheers

i have no connections with zhangping, but i remembered browsing her website and she is selling the whole set at $41++cchew:
I saw 四五快读 selling at one of chinese bookstore at the bookfair 2010 at Suntec. The whole set is about $68 . There were posters about 四五快读 on their wall too.
for cheaper alternative, you can consider getting from her.

I think tamarind should be the best person to recommend you pertaining to age 5 and age 7. I only started putting a heavy weighing in the CL after my dd (Now P5) did not do well in last year SA1 (e.g. oral test only 12/20) . As such I started sourcing for CL Story books and CL show (VCD/DVD which only came in Chinese sub tile) aim to buck up her CL standard. By doing all these, I can observe my dd now hardly spent time on learning CL spelling and dictation. She even scored 98 marks for her spelling rev test without revision. Her P5 SA1 exam score was higher than P4 SA1. Therefore I would advise to let the child get use to see/listen to the show in CL without the helping of English sub title. I believe you would able to see the benefit in the long term. Hope the information is useful to you. -

i only know tamarind got from dangdang at $37 including shipping (correct?) so that is the comparison that i made (ie comparing that i don't have amex or citibank, if i want to get whole set, i was considering the online shop cos the price diff was only $5 and no need to wait for shipping time).
anyway, i got the first 3 vols only......asked my friend coming back from china to get for me  (paisay to ask him to get the full set cos it is heavy.) -

$37 is the cost of direct shipping from dangdang.com to our home address.
For those who bought from sprees, the cost is cheaper. But the risk is high because there have been cases of organizers disappearing after collecting the money. Also buyers need to collect the items from a collection point or pay extra money to use courier. The complete set of 7 books is slightly over 2 kg, not accepted as a mail item.
Of course the cheapest is like what you have done
Book 1 is only RMB 19.40, about SGD 4, the other books in the series are even cheaper.

I agree with Brenda about watching only Chinese sub titles. I don't think that English subtitles are effective. My hubby said that he must read the English subtitles, the result is that he still could not speak mandarin fluently after so many years.

For kids at age 5 to 7, I would recommend the Chinese Doraemon series, and all the Hayao Miyazaki 宮崎 駿 animes in Chinese. I am sure that kids will enjoy them even though they don't completely understand the language.
I rarely have the time to watch HK/China TV series now, I also don't know which series is suitable for kids age 5 to 7.
