Thanks lego! Has the certs been useful for local uni admissions or scholarships?
-
Saw this - more than 700 diploma were given out last year.

Diploma is given upon completion of JC (Dec).
Not all local uni courses offers early admission, certain application will be processed after the A level results are released.
An outstanding student with very good academic records, achievements that demonstrates other qualities that are valued, performs well at interviews/selection test will be sought after.

DD’s friend who does not have the diploma, did not do any early admission application, applied for admission after the A level results were released with a perfect UAP score. She was offered a local uni scholarship too upon clearing the interview/selection. -
Thanks lego! The kids just had their block tests and received results. How do we know whether they are coping well? What is considered an average grade?

I look at the percentile to gauge my child’s relative performance. It is available on the school’s portal (ISP), u can log in using parent’s userid/password.
If the percentile is not really off, I take it as ok. I think the percentile info is computed automatically when the teachers key in their students grades, so what u see at the first instance may not be the final one until all of them have done so.
The school publishes the distinction rate for certain subjects on its website. For subjects that has a high distinction rate, a student with below the average grade may still end up with a distinction at the A levels.
Dd says for Maths - students who score D and below grades have to go for extra lessons while the rest have the free period in class to do their own work/revision. (It is inbuilt into the timetable).
Other subjects - class teachers may pick up those who are falling behind to have remedials/consultations after school hours.
Students can also book a consultation session with their teachers on their own accord. -

Thanks i think ISP to review progress report is only available from next Fri onwards. So will wait and see. So far she's doing ok in the tests but I dunno how to benchmark. She does mention for certain subjects like sciences, they do have a slight edge over the O students regarding the content mastery.

...I am a bit more familiar with Hwa Chong as my other child is moving on to Year 5 next year. HCI requires a B3 in Chem to read Bio in JC if you did not read Bio in upper sec...
OT:
Hi, yup, HCJC is generous (which I thought may have to do with the calibre/ potential of the students who are enrolled). In both my kids' (different, IP) secondary schools, it is a prerequisite to study the science- subject in the upper secondary years (& obtain a minimum%, plus some other criteria), to be allowed to offer it as a H2 in Year 5 (not considering jae kids in this example) -
I was one of those who tried Bio at HCIC without doing Bio in upper sec - dropped it after 3 months for Econs lol

Some reasons why HCJC allows for Bio in Year 5, without prerequisite Sec Sch Bio is that
- A level Bio syllabus is very different from upper Sec Bio
- a lot of the combinations and special programmes in HCI upper sec do not allow students to read Bio. For example, you cannot read BSP, HP, or even Computing, with Bio.
I am not sure whether you can read Physics at H2 level if you didn't do Upper Sec / O level Physics - it didn''t occur to me to check out as Physics is compulsory at HCI (High School) upper sec. -

Nothing against hc but I would think it is partly because 1) they make physics and chem compulsory in upper sec and 2) dis allow triple science if one chooses to be in the special programs

So if they don’t have this special exception of letting the student study bio in jc without having done bio in upper sec, they would be making the pool really small -
I donno if it is an exception or whether it is historical - but right from our time (more than 25 years ago) this was already possible in HCJC and it wasn’t uncommon. In my triple Science HCJC class, there were 8 or 9 of us who did not do Bio in Sec School. I was the only one who dropped Bio after 3 months (and changed classes).
NYGH does not make Physics compulsory,I think. -

So like my best friend likes to say “read the post carefully “ I mentioned partly because. :rotflmao:

Ok jokes aside, I get it, they have had this special thing since decades ago. And like you said, jc bio is different from upper sec bio. Hence not knowing upper sec bio has no impact on doing well in jc bio.
But still, historical or not, if they impose this prerequisite, they would really be cutting off many high caliber non bio students from HCl, no?
