Does the secondary school provide the students with some practice papers in school?
Agree. Exam like Paper 1 English composition & Chinese zuo wen, how to prepare ? because don't even know what compo topic coming out, nor Paper 2 Comprehension passage ... anything can come out.MrsKiasu\" post_id=\"2022475\" time=\"1620111961:
Mine is till after mom's day. I didn't tell them the mother's day. Celebrations seem to have low priority to me now. I dont mind to have 2 papers a day get it done and over with even not much prep.
Another subject hard to prepare is English Literature unseen poetry : how to prepare poetry test ?
Do you all like poetry ?
In primary school, we can refer to past year papers (I printed some P5 SA1 exam papers, they have Situational Writing + Continuous Writing qns buried inside there). And also can use the 3-year series of PSLE exam papers, zuowen assessment books etc.
Secondary school literature no assessment books for poetry I guess? I hated Lit in school becos the teacher was so unclear, answers also dunno how to phrase them. Have to pray for a good teacher willing to let students consult them. -

For unforseen prose/ literary analysis, teachers may provide us a sample (text, question & model answer, marking criteria) beforehand, plus the focus (for instance, know your literary devices, themes). There are extensive practices during lessons so well-prepared -

For such papers, there are 2 \"tracks\" for preparation: the general, and the specific.

The specific is what Singaporeans tend to focus on - looking for the \"right answer\". But for humanities subjects, this is more in the form rather than the content (content is too varied to \"spot\" with any degree of certainty). For e.g., in unseen poetry, there will be guidelines given by teachers as to things to look out for (themes, alliteration, allusions, imagery, rhythm, word choice, ...), and also about how to structure and present the essay using the appropriate style, terminology, etc.
The general, because it is so inchoate, is often ignored. This would include reading widely, having a \"feel\" of the subject, being able to extract specific items and examples from general knowledge and understanding, and arrange them and present them in a way that answers the question. These can be prepared for in advance by building up the reservoir of knowledge and understanding, but a lot depends on the student being able to think, arrange his facts and arguments, and present them well, all during the time allocated in an exam. If students spent more time on this, and less on the specific parts, they would probably do better overall, and in the long run.
Note: I am NOT saying that a student should not spend time polishing up the \"specific\" skills for the purposes of exams. Just that many students seem to spend more time on that than necessary, at the expense of the other part. -
Forum is so quiet...are your kids still having exams? Busy with coaching them?
DS exams over last Fri...relaxed mode, whole weekend I let him play...On Sunday I sat him down and asked him to plan his own work schedule for this week. Surprisingly he is now mature enough to look at his calendar, and think about what tasks he needs to do each day, and write them down into a list. Previously I was the one planning it & he just followed. Now instead of nagging “have u done XYZ?” I merely ask “what do u plan to do today?” and he tells me a pretty responsible plan. :imcool: -
Done already. Reward dd with McD while waiting for sister. Watched few hours of tv while I napped. About bedtime time she took out the puzzle book and doing it. Never do this kind of things before haha.
Need to try ask her do some work everyday since (hopefully) momentum still there. They starting check/marking some papers I heard. This round after nagging she is abit better…not as if the exam is not hers. -
Some subject teachers finished marking already, but still waiting for their colleagues to finish then can return the papers to the kids. I’m quite nervous to see whether our new 作文 strategy worked (memorize chunks of good phrases orally) - already 2 weekends passed but still no news…I guess need 2nd marker & if got discrepancy need discussion?
