On a side note, can I ask if anyone here has some ideas to keep the attention span of our children during Home base learning? My son's attention span is rather short when he does HBL at home.
How old is he, and how shor is the span? Because in a normal classroom, they won't be just staring at a screen for long periods. You could allow him to have \"fidget\" breaks every 15 mins or so, just for a couple minutes, and a longer break every hour. And you can find silly or amusing things for him to do during his short breaks - some actions, or something he can look out the window to see, sing a song, or whatever. You just need to make sure the break is kept to the time allowed.

There's a thread on home-based learning - have a look for other people's suggestions and experiences.

Yes I agree with that. Have confidence in our government to contain the virus spread. On a side note, can I ask if anyone here has some ideas to keep the attention span of our children during Home base learning? My son's attention span is rather short when he does HBL at home.
        How old is your son?

For primary school children, if there is no space constraint, let him do his work in the living room where an adult can remind him whenever he loses his focus. Have frequent breaks so that he needs to focus only for a certain duration (eg 45 mins or 1 hour). He also need to be well-rested. All the best.
...Yes, can't let this name stick to us, because it may affect our future ATBs and other upcoming MICE events. We need to shake this bad association off asap.

I also think our MOH should not dwell on this variant during their pressers cos foreign media might report something not in our favour. You don't want the headline to read, \"Singapore schools hit by B1617.2 variant\"...
https://www.latribune.fr/depeches/reuters/KCN2CY0PG/coronavirus-singapour-met-en-garde-contre-les-effets-des-variants-sur-les-enfants.html

Coronavirus: Singapour met en garde contre les effets des variants sur les enfants (17/05/2021)
\"Some of these mutations (of the virus) are much more virulent and they seem to attack younger children\" Education Minister CCS said, without specifying how many children had contracted the B1617 strain, known as the Indian variant.

Best is don’t go out unless necessary.

There is a time lag before they do the contact tracing. Friend’s school informed them 3 days ago that got confirmed case so move to HBL. Today then MOH called them to say kids must QO cos the confirmed case was in close contact with the whole class. During these 3 days, the whole class of kids could have wandered all over the island liao.
I wonder how many days did MOH take to QO close contacts last year. After one whole year MOH did not seem to have enhanced their work flow or systems?? A delay of 3 days seems too long as the close contacts could have run around the island liao.

I think ideally should issue QO to close contacts within 24 hours.

I do not know the reason for the delay. But bear in mind, the TT Safe Entry check-in was not implemented nationwide until Monday 17 May 2021. Plenty of adults could have been untraceable before then. And the kids would have been untraceable until the school admin could dig up their detailed records...

As much as many like to distrust TT, in hindsight I now think if it has been fully rolled out EARLIER, it would have played a major role in curbing the rampant spread.

The immediate close contacts, for example, parents, siblings and his whole class should receive QO ASAP. The rest like seated close to a stranger at shopping mall, traceable via TT token, can come later lah. Btw, I understand still need to wait for the confirmed case to upload TT token data before MOH can start work (contact tracing).

OT a bit: Seeing ex-colleagues sharing their \"staycation\" experiences - conducting HBL while serving QO; having to leave their children and relying on the support of their spouse to take care of things back at home etc., is a reminder of the many unseen sacrifices that teachers may have to make. :salute:

Those same class as confirmed case was contacted and transported to quarantine facility all within 24 hours - according to my friend. Despite having to be quarantined, she was quite impressed with our gov's efficiency.

:yikes: :scared:  I would not be expecting them to still continue working actually, just like how the QO kids should not be expected to keep up with their HBL as if nothing has changed.

I know some of the kids are unable to sleep at night due to their fears and worries, which are very real, more real than any of us who are not locked in like them. They call it a “staycation” to try to keep upbeat, but it’s not.

I can't speak for any of them as I don't know them or their situations personally. But if I were them, I would prefer to keep busy! Of course, if some don't wish to or find it difficult, they shouldn't be forced to, I guess, since they are technically on LOA of some kind. But teachers are responsible people, and they know that their students and colleagues will need \"all hands on deck\" during this period, so if they can, I'm sure most will try to do their part. And for the kids, leisure can get really boring if it's all day, every day, and all in one room; some HBL will break the monotony!
