2021 P1 Registration Exercise for 2022 In-take

Hi parents, I’m a total noob and oblivious to this whole P1 registration thing till a week ago when I found out there is only 1 school within 1km of where we stay (RGPS), and another school within 1-2km (NYPS). I have twin girls born 2018, and a son born 2020. I think there is still a chance the twin girls can get into RGPS based on <1km, but I’ve been told by several people that there is just zilch chance of getting into NYPS, I shouldn’t even try. So I’m freaking out (I hope prematurely) because what about my son? He has no co-ed school to go to near us. I was told by friends and relatives that I don’t even have to try being a PV or active community leader because we are not <1km from NYPS. People keep saying we have to move somewhere else. This really upsets us. We have had the same address for almost 30 years. We love where we stay. It is so upsetting to think that we have to uproot our family just for our son to have a chance to get into a primary school.

Any parents out there who managed to get their kids into NYPS through phase 2b or 2c route, while staying >1km away? Do I have a fighting chance if I join their PV or be a GRL? Because I am willing to try anything. I’m not even trying to get my son into an elite school, it’s just that by virtue of our address we only have this single elite school to send our son to!

Of the 44 schools that I have listed as most-at-risk of balloting,
After day 1 of Phase 2B:
- 21 of the above schools have applications matching or exceeding the number of places available, i.e. 21 schools are potentially heading into the ballot.
- 5 schools have less than 5 places left. I expect these 5 to join the group above.
- 7 schools have between 6 and 10 places left. Some ‘choice’ schools here, unlikely application numbers will stay where they are.
- 11 schools have more than 10 places left. In addition, 2 other schools, Anderson and Mee Toh aren’t that far away from this group in terms of places remaining.

Some school number seem too low, not really reflective of the usual number. Overall applicant number for day 1 is close to 300 less than last year. Could be partially due to more take-up up to 2A2 and reduce the overall number of 2B.

Anyway potentially can add 600-700+ for day 2.

Unfortunately, for those who are aiming for the schools above, including the 11+2 schools with more than 10 seats, you aren't safe yet. As Lexy says above, there could be potentially many more people who could be lurking and applying on day 2.

For NYPS -

can you check the online PV Application form, see whether anywhere inside the Form contain a clause that state \"only those SC living less than 1 km, then can apply to be a PV ?\"

If nothing mentioned about this inside the Application form,

can u call up GO (NYPS),

clarify
is it only SC living less than 1 km, then can apply to be PV or GRL (phase 2B) ?

Do this basic fundamental background homework check first, before start applying to be a PV / GRL, can ?

- My daughter currently has a place secured under Phase 2A.
- However we would like to apply for Phase 2B before the closing deadline today.
- Is it true that when we apply online for Phase 2B, our Phase 2A seat will automatically be forfeited?
- Do we need to physically call up (or email) the school to inform them of our intent to forfeit our Phase 2A seat? Or once we apply for Phase 2B, the Phase 2A seat is automatically forfeited?

Appreciate any advice on this. Thanks!

Balloting at the NYPS has been more than 30 years. If I don't remembered wrongly, I bumped into an article stating NYPS need balloting in some 1980++ in a particular phase 2 or 3 or the already changed 2C category. That's the history.

Forward going, MOE (or the then Minister) mentioned they look into reviewing the increasing the number in 2C, maybe it will increase to 30 or more in the future that will be applicable to you. Unsure if the 30 month rule will change as a result to balance things up.

As you stated \"by virtue of our address\", it's the same for those staying within 1km and wouldn't their argument be stronger as they could be staying just a stone throw away or just beside the school? They also have to resort to balloting if they have the heart to do so. For 2C, It is not uncommon for 70+ applicant within 1km to pry for 20 spots. By increasing the 2C spots, it will only encourage more people who do not have the risk appetite before to try for the school or more people moving near in order to have a chance.

The last time phase 2B for NYPS doesn't need balloting was in 2017, 20 applied for 20 spots. I am not sure if you want to count on that to stay at your current location while applying via 2B if you are eligible. I am also not sure if the 30 month rule apply to you if your twins gains priority admission through a home-school distance category, whether you can move within 1km of NYPS and stay within the required distance category from RGPS.

Before the post from floppy, phtthp and myself blow your mind, calm yourself down and go through the primary school registration thought process in the order the system is set up:

Phase 1 - Not applicable to you twins but may be applicable to your boy. Planning to put them together in 1 school or separate? If together then which school of the area that is acceptable to you.

Phase 2A1/2A2 - Ask yourself which primary school you and your spouse, its easily to overlook the alma mater option.

2B - Apart from PV/GRL, what other association do you have? Do you plan school during the twin time or just for your boy. You actually do not need to try only when its your time for your boy to register, if you know what I meant.

2C - Go for a sure in or go for a straight fight?

2Cs - back up choice.

You can only register your child in one school at any phase. Multiple applications will not be accepted.

If you have secured a P1 place for your child in a previous registration phase, you will need to withdraw your place from the school before registering in another school. Unless you have withdrawn your place, MOE will not process any further online applications made for your child and your child will remain in the school that your child had earlier secured a place at. You are to ensure that the child has been successfully withdrawn before submitting another online application.
