Affiliation.
And not just any affiliation.
But affiliation to some of the top tier secondary schools.

Understand that affiliation is an important criteria to some or maybe to a lot of people.
My spouse was also telling me RGPS no affiliation but NYPS has. But I was in the opinion that to get into NHS using affiliation still need 251, and if our daughter get 251 in RGPS I will be happy enough as can get into most top secondary schools. And for boys at NYPS there's no affiliation? But it's still such a popular and overly subscribed school.

As long as you are happy and satisfied, that should be good enough.

For some people, there's always a lingering 'what if'.
If the kid scores 251, it will not get her into MGS, NYGH, SCGS or SNGS if she is coming from RGPS. However, 251 will definitely get her into the schools above if she is coming from their respective affiliated primary schools. In a placement exercise like the PSLE, a single pt can make a huge difference in whether you will meet the cutoff point or not. Hence, it is not unreasonable for people to want to maximise whatever advantage they can get, even if it's for a mere 5 points.

NYPS reputation and appeal came from it's past, verifiable records of >45% scoring 250 & above. Some people think it's a BFD knowing that once you get accepted, you have a 50% chance of scoring 250 & above. So, what's not to like?
Is RGPS results also Ard there ?

Can y’all imagine if RGPS is affiliated to RGS, how crazy popular it’ll become.

Actually, RGPS is the “easiest” brand sch to enter, partly also has its location to thank.
NYPS at least has the d’leedon effect, almost 2k units there, many to rent or buy.
For RGPS, considering price, within 1km want to rent a proper size own stay unit also hard to come by, That’s why People got time to debate here whether the school good or not good.

Move RGPS to a new estate like punggol, or even AMK like st nicks, spaces all snatch up alrdy, doubt still got time to debate haha.
I look at my friend who is so happy her son got into Rosyth, the lack of affiliation never crossed her mind, then looking at the topics here.. shrug shoulder

> Which is why, last year’s ballot for SC < 1km raises some eyebrow given the availability of 77 places.
> Also why, claims of > 100 SC living within 1km (and all girls!) is a little hard to accept.
> This year’s 97 places will give us a better indication of where things stand (and based on current number, is unlikely to see balloting for SC < 1km).

"That’s why People got time to debate here whether the school good or not good. "
> I don’t think anyone is debating whether RGPS is good or not good.
> Have to appreciate the nuance in manorway’s question of what’s the appeal?
> It is a reasonable question considering that there are similarly good or not good schools nearby, that comes with affiliation. The answer that it is easier to get in (compared to the others) is a fairly good response and addresses the reason why RGPS may be more appealing than the other good or not good schools.

> This 3 statements have some related inter-dependency.
> If RGPS moves to a new estate, it’s spaces will definitely be snatched up. However, it’s results may not be ‘around there’.
> Take Rosyth 2015 results for example:
Percentage of students who qualify for express: (Without E/NA) 82.5%, (With E/NA) 87.4%
No of students who scored 265 & above: 43 (11%)
No of students who scored 250 & above: 128 (33%)
While the no. of students scoring 250 & above are very much in line with some of the popular primary schools, the no. of students qualifying for express are not. SHPPS, another GEP school that has it’s spaces snatched up, and in a new-ish estate, produces similar numbers. Question: what would be the numbers like if you strip off the GEP students?
> Notwithstanding, the numbers are really kinda expected as enough research materials have shown that the SES of the students play a huge part in determining whether the results will be around there or not. YCK/Hougang and Tampines have significantly greater proportion of HDB flats than Bukit Timah.
> Finally, having spaces all snatch up doesn’t really end the debate. The original question that manorway raises is just as applicable to Rosyth as to RGPS: what’s the appeal?

Although RGPS is a girls school, so is CHIJ St Nicks, Singapore Chinese Girls Schools, MGS...
So what is the appeal of these 2 even more highly subscribed school?

Affiliation.
And not just any affiliation.

Actually its only their IP and IB program are considered top tier and the vast majority doesn't get into these programs because there are no affiliation AL or T-score discount for IP/IB. It is also not uncommon for top scorers in these affiliated schools, to apply for other SS due to the generous affiliation discounts. e.g. AL16 or 18 etc. Furthermore, some may feel that the JC after SN or SCGS is not as prestigious as compared to say HCI, RJC NJC etc. If you are those who think about branding, then this will be a concern.

So there are pros and cons. Having said that, there is still no reason to believe that these \"top tier\" schools doesn't have a \"tuition culture\".

Some people think it's a BFD knowing that once you get accepted, you have a 50% chance of scoring 250 & above. So, what's not to like?
Only NYPS girls has got affiliation to NYGH, which mean around 50% of the cohort (boys) will not be eligible (assuming its 50.50). Out of the remaining 50%, assuming 60% score above 250+, only 30% of the cohort will be eligible for NYGH. And out of this 30%, some children may not wish to continue to higher Chinese and opt to go schools like NJC RGS, MGS etc.

And now under the current AL system, the discount to NYGH is only 1 AL point + (M) @ AL8. With AL8, the child is already eligible other IP schools even without affiliation. So it is certainly not a stroll in the park when you get into NYPS. And of course, a child from NYPS may have a better potential in DSA due to to school reputation.

On the stats so far. I still think it’s touch and go- either balloting at 1km with good chance or 1 to 2km.

Assuming last year was outlier. The fact I was told 50 percent for 1km. Even if it’s a loose estimation probably holds some truth. If not could have said 90 percent chance…so don’t know what to think. Of cos best is don’t think but results still long time away

I also thought the same way that if you got NYPS you got 50% chance of getting above 250. But having say that I read someone saying RGPS was having around 40% above 250 but was shot down saying it includes GEP students, likewise for NYPS? We also do not have data on NYPS main stream students results? I'm lucky enough to be within 1KM of both NYPS and RGPS. However looking at the odds between both, and not having good backup 2CS schools we fall back on I feel that RGPS will be a greater choice. Though my wife is still contemplating whether to apply for GRPS or NYPS.

Over at NYPS, there are now 49 applicants for 20 vacancies, the ballot odds is 41%. So be prepared to see some NYPS applicants living within 1km to both schools to switch over to RGPS.

I feel or rather hoping it's 1KM to 2KM for this year. Looking at the seats available for this year (97) comparing to 2020 (77) balloting with 1KM and 2019 (123) balloting within 2KM, it's smack right in the middle. So perhaps the balloting will be in the middle as well?

Also looking at this year and last year application by Day 2, it's 101 (2021) against 120 (2020).

But of course stats are just stats, they may or may not have any relation to what's going to happen today.

I believe there will be 1km doing in today after digesting nanyang stats especially if you have boy and girl eventually in 2c. Get in nanyang then settle both in one fell swoop
