      Affiliation.
      And not just any affiliation.
But affiliation to some of the top tier secondary schools.

Understand that affiliation is an important criteria to some or maybe to a lot of people.
My spouse was also telling me RGPS no affiliation but NYPS has. But I was in the opinion that to get into NHS using affiliation still need 251, and if our daughter get 251 in RGPS I will be happy enough as can get into most top secondary schools. And for boys at NYPS there's no affiliation? But it's still such a popular and overly subscribed school.

As long as you are happy and satisfied, that should be good enough.

For some people, there's always a lingering 'what if'.
If the kid scores 251, it will not get her into MGS, NYGH, SCGS or SNGS if she is coming from RGPS. However, 251 will definitely get her into the schools above if she is coming from their respective affiliated primary schools. In a placement exercise like the PSLE, a single pt can make a huge difference in whether you will meet the cutoff point or not. Hence, it is not unreasonable for people to want to maximise whatever advantage they can get, even if it's for a mere 5 points.

NYPS reputation and appeal came from it's past, verifiable records of >45% scoring 250 & above. Some people think it's a BFD knowing that once you get accepted, you have a 50% chance of scoring 250 & above. So, what's not to like?[/quote]Only NYPS girls has got affiliation to NYGH, which mean around 50% of the cohort (boys) will not be eligible (assuming its 50.50). Out of the remaining 50%, assuming 60% score above 250+, only 30% of the cohort will be eligible for NYGH. And out of this 30%, some children may not wish to continue to higher Chinese and opt to go schools like NJC RGS, MGS etc.

And now under the current AL system, the discount to NYGH is only 1 AL point + (M) @ AL8. With AL8, the child is already eligible other IP schools even without affiliation. So it is certainly not a stroll in the park when you get into NYPS. And of course, a child from NYPS may have a better potential in DSA due to to school reputation.

On the stats so far. I still think it’s touch and go- either balloting at 1km with good chance or 1 to 2km.

Assuming last year was outlier. The fact I was told 50 percent for 1km. Even if it’s a loose estimation probably holds some truth. If not could have said 90 percent chance…so don’t know what to think. Of cos best is don’t think but results still long time away

I also thought the same way that if you got NYPS you got 50% chance of getting above 250. But having say that I read someone saying RGPS was having around 40% above 250 but was shot down saying it includes GEP students, likewise for NYPS? We also do not have data on NYPS main stream students results? I'm lucky enough to be within 1KM of both NYPS and RGPS. However looking at the odds between both, and not having good backup 2CS schools we fall back on I feel that RGPS will be a greater choice. Though my wife is still contemplating whether to apply for GRPS or NYPS.

Over at NYPS, there are now 49 applicants for 20 vacancies, the ballot odds is 41%. So be prepared to see some NYPS applicants living within 1km to both schools to switch over to RGPS.

I feel or rather hoping it's 1KM to 2KM for this year. Looking at the seats available for this year (97) comparing to 2020 (77) balloting with 1KM and 2019 (123) balloting within 2KM, it's smack right in the middle. So perhaps the balloting will be in the middle as well?

Also looking at this year and last year application by Day 2, it's 101 (2021) against 120 (2020).

But of course stats are just stats, they may or may not have any relation to what's going to happen today.

I believe there will be 1km doing in today after digesting nanyang stats especially if you have boy and girl eventually in 2c. Get in nanyang then settle both in one fell swoop

                    “ verifiable records of >45% scoring 250 & above… once you get accepted, you have a 50% chance of scoring 250 & above ”
conveniently equates to 50% of a child scoring 250 , no mention of accounting for GEP cohort but when the same is said about RGPS, u can no longer equate it the same manner.

As a parent who is considering RGPS/NYPS I came here hoping to see constructive views, can’t help but seemingly a couple of people here whose views seem very skew..

Firstly, there are indeed many RGPS girls who got into GEP. I remembered like HALF of the gep cohort for my DD2’s batch was made up of RGPS girls!!! I believe likewise for gep centres like Nanyang Pri. Don’t ask me how the schools did it.

BUT, if one were to separate the results of gep and mainstream students, the overall psle results of RGPS mainstream is somewhat similar to SCGS and MGS.

I recall when I went to the school to collect my DD2’s psle result slips, I overheard the conversation of two fathers. They were surprised to know that their daughters were from the same primary school. When both asked each other what results their daughters got, both answered 23X, and their conversation stopped there.

                      >45% of the cohort scoring abv 250 includes GEP.

23X seems like the mean for mainstream? So if the student in RGPS is just very average, then they will appreciate the advantages of pri schs with affiliation to good sec sch. That is why quite a handful of rgps parents subsequently seek to transfer their daughters out of rgps into schools like MGS/SCGS/SN/St Mag etc before psle.

Again, in the first place, it is easier to get into RGPS than SCGS/MGS Pri if one stays around Bukit Timah.

End of the day getting into top schools does not mean great PSLE results.

It all depends on a combination of things, the child, the parents and the school. It needs all the 3 ingredients.
My spouse ex-colleague’s daughter is from NYPS got 21x for PSLE (apparently already went for a lot of tuition) and ended up in Queenstown Sec Sch, and my nieces and nephews went Rosyth but only got 22x and 231. Whereas my wife’s nieces went to a neighborhood school but all 3 got above 250.

So it really depends a lot on the child and parents. Can’t just depend on school alone regardless if it’s top schools or so called neighborhood schools.
