All About Choosing Piano Schools And Teachers

Hi,


My son is 3yrs & 5mths old. He said tt he wants to learn piano. Can anyone recommend a school for him to start with? We prefer the 1to1 lesson.

I am thinking of buying a 2nd hand Reuben & Son’s upright piano, height about 125cm (exam grade) for my daughter. It’s about 7 years old and is selling $1800. Do you think it’s a good buy ?

Dont have much experience with pianos as I do not play the instrument.

I'm new to this forum
My 4.5 yr old daughter has been having individual piano lessons, for past 9 months, so far progress is ok, finished Lina Ng Book 1, just started on book2.

now I am also considering sending her to YJMC,as it is supposed to train hearing,solfege & pitch? think that helps in aural tests in future?
& also, in the 3rd & 4th year, improvisation & composition will be covered..think that is helpful for her Grade 5 theory which has a section whereby you need to do simple composition right?

However, I look through the YJMC book 1 & 2, think it's VERY simple for her,& I think her current standard is ard book3,so I am afraid that it may be boring for her to go through book 1 & 2,& may be a waste of time?
but the Yamaha teacher said that note reading is only a very small section in their weekly class, is it true?
Is it true that solfege, pitch & hearing training is very hard to be trained in individual class? what about improvisation & composition?for people whoe went through the 4 year course, are the students really better in hearing?

thinking of changing my daughter's individual lesson teacher also..as she just recently have the 1st teacher changed..
Anyone has recommendation for a good motivating teacher,patient & good with young kids, ard [b]CCK [/b]area?
I am ok to go teacher's place or at my place..
bt panjang/hillview/bt batok/bukit timah/clementi/woodlands/jurong/thomson area are also ok for me

I personally don’t think ear training is difficult in an individual class, I think it’s just "not the norm". Majority of the teachers teaching classical method concentrates on rhythm and note reading (which is the foundation of classical music), ear training or training students to listen via ear (rather than note reading) is more for improvisation and jazz. If you want the teacher to cover this area then you’ll need to inform the teacher as most will just leave till exam time, and even then, they’d just "run through". You need to look for a teacher that is able to cover this area (trust me, not all teachers are able to teach or even familiar with this).


As for whether ALL students who attend JMC come out with a better ear, the answer is, no. It really depends on the child (and of course to some extent, the teacher). Some kids have an in-born good ear, those have an advantage.

I'm a part-time piano teacher who stay @Hougang. For Beginner $70, Grade 1 $80 & Grade 2 $100...The lesson fee is for 4 session, 45 min per session (30 min for Practical & 15 min for Theory). I also will assist you for ABRSM Practical & Theory Registraion. Let me know if u r interested. Anyway, you may let your daughter join the trial session(fee per visit basis).
