      The top winners are more or less the same people - 70 to 80%. Of course there will be some differences. If he had sat for SMOPS in P5 then it is really an achievement for him to get a bronze vs mostly P6 kids. Anyhow, his gold will probably get him a place in NUSH regardless of his performance in SMOPS.

        With regards to Maths Olympiad, any parents out there have just resorted on getting the child to practice the series of Maths Olympiad book published by Terry Wee and it works? You know the Maths Olympiad training course course more than a thousand dollars by one maths enrichment centre. Is it worth spending that kind of money?

          Hi Jenn,

          Between NUSH and the list of top schools below, given a choice, which is the natural choice for most as of today?

          NUSH vs HCI/NYGH ---->
          NUSH vs RI/RGS ------>
          NUSH vs ACS(I) ------>
          NUSH vs NJC ----->

          Have I missed out any of above?
          I always find this rather odd and I am not alone. Some people just like to blow thing out of proportion as in they are trying very hard to depict ACS(I) as a better school than it is. Firstly, it is already hard to understand why it is an IP school. I think they are pushing very hard. Many schools that are better academically didn't get IP status.

              Just to share with the forum on my boys view. Last year, my boy was deciding which school to apply for the DSA. He attended the NUSH talk and was very keen to join them. He decided to register for the test.

              After a few days, he came back to me and told me that he has decided to focus and try IP school instead of NUSH. The reason he gave was that NUSH is new and the pioneer batch has not even graduated yet. There are no Alumi to network and will find be difficult to find a job or support as compare to an RI/Duman High/NJC/HCI student. These IP schools have a large Alumi organisation that will help and support the student. They have rich history and culture that will the students.

              He decided to skip the test and focus in the IP School. He was successful in one of the top IP school and told me that he has never regreted for not trying NUSH. He feels the history, culture and Alumi spirit is very important to help the student to develop holistically.

              I share the same view as my son. The network of the school is very important and I think it help in their future development.

                For my boy, we thought discipline and character building is important at this age and we chose an IP boys school than NUSH, though he is also strong in Maths and Science. We also thought school having developed CCA programmes is important to provide a total holistic education for the boy at this age.

                  Though it may not be wrong to choose established IP schools, the reason given is not very correct. Alumni will not just help one get a job just bcos one graduated from the same school. I used to think the same way but it is not true, at least most of the time it is not true.

                  I worked in a research and development organisation presently and my colleagues regularly took in students from IP schools for research programme. Very seldom do we favour students just bcos they are from the same schools as ourselves. The students attitude is still the very deciding factor. The same goes to job employment and promotion. My present department are all alumni from schools like RI, RGS, RV, Dunman, HCI...but when it comes to identifying research attitutdes in scientific areas, we still recognise NUSH's students as the best among all.

                    Jenn:
                    Similarly, a few who were rejected during the PSLE application stage were later offered places even though they have started a few days of school in other secondary schools.

                    Not true. Last year, those rejected during the PSLE application stage were later called by NUSH on 31 Dec 08 (Wed) due to vacancy available. They had not started school in any secondary school yet. If they took up the NUSH offer, they would start school at NUSH on 02 Jan 09 (Fri).

                      I read the blog of a girl who was in River Valley for a few days before she transfered to NUSH.
