Tougher becos it is SAP? I hv not idea since it is very difficult to compare IP sch these days.
last year DHS cut off point was higher than NJC
presumably DHS will get higher demand for places as they produced president scholar recently and NJC has a long drought of president scholars, even though NJC has a long history .... but that was for JC 1&2; and as you mentioned, DHS is SAP school -

Why do you really wish to get into NJC? Care to share your reasons? Are you aware of the compulsory boarding programme (10 weeks per year) from JH1 to JH4? Your P6 SA1 results are already fantastic and not mediocre.Hi,I'm a student here and would like some opinions on NJC such as the teachers, workload etc. Considering the school for DSA(yes a bit late,i know).Been browsing through the pages since evening. On page 84 now.
Should I consider this school for DSA Academics? My results ranged like this:
English: 86.8/100 (Top: 87.3/100)
Maths: 93/100 (Top: 98/100)
Science: 77/100 (Top: 84.5/100)
Chinese: 87.3/100 (Top: 91+/100)
HCL: Merit
My results are mediocre but I really wish to get into NJC. Please advise! TIA! -

Yes i am aware of the boarding programme and I think its awesome.Actually my SA1 results aren't really up to expections. My parents could've murdered me for Science... I want to get into NJC mainly because from all the forum threads i read,i found NJC the most relaxing. At first,i considered NYGH,but then I found out that although they did not throw you into the deep end of the pool the moment you are admitted to the school,I realised that I would not be happy there for I found that the school was too gentle for me.I felt uncomfortable around so many girls and the thought of being in a girls school for 4 years really scared me.Hence, DHS and NJC came into the picture.I considered DHS because my favourite senior was there and she was also my mentor when I was in P4.However,as I am not really good in my HMT, I decided that if my aggregate permits,DHS shall be my second choice, for DHS is a SAP school.I remembered going to the open house and openly asking my friend who was KongZi.Yes,that's how bad my knowledge of China's history is..What interests me is that NJC has a compulsory boarding programme,is a government school(i'm not very a very well-off family, hence the fees of an independent school was a problem) and the fact that I felt I could survive 6 long years comfortably at a relaxed pace in the starting and slowly adapt to the life of a secondary school student. One of my bestfriends,a korean girl, sort of influence me too.Her mathematics is excellent, and she says she would only go to two schools(diedie must go): NUS High and NJC.She has already submitted the application for DSA to NJC.After talking to her over the phone and via SMS, she persuaded me to DSA into NJC.I have just submitted my DSA application into NJC.

Why do you find the boarding programme awesome, do you get this feeling from your friends? Or is the freedom and no more nagging from your parents during school boarding term? Nice food? Are you used to share with someone in a room as the arrangement maybe 2 persons per room based on class register number? Need to confirm with parents of students from NJC about room arrangement.livewith_vanilla:
I don't think any parents would have done that to you due to your SA1 results and pls do not exaggerate.Actually my SA1 results aren't really up to expections. My parents could've murdered me for Science...

Wow, care to quote those remarks from this thread that make you think so.I want to get into NJC mainly because from all the forum threads i read,i found NJC the most relaxing.
livewith_vanilla:
Merit in HCL is above average unless you are expecting distinction (>80 marks) for your HMT to be considered really good in HMT.However,as I am not really good in my HMT
livewith_vanilla:
This is not necessary true.Fees can play a deciding factor in the selection of schools but there are also financial assistance to help students studying in independent schools. It does not mean that you have to come from well-off family to study in independent schools. There are also IP schools that are government schools. What interests me is that NJC has a compulsory boarding programme,is a government school(i'm not very a very well-off family, hence the fees of an independent school was a problem)

Pls do not succumb to peer influence. No offence but these are words from a big sister (me) telling you to stick to your principle as you are responsible for your own self.Bear in mind that NJC offers \"A\" level whereas NUSH offers their own diploma at the end of the 6-year study course. One of my bestfriends,a korean girl, sort of influence me too.Her mathematics is excellent, and she says she would only go to two schools(diedie must go): NUS High and NJC.
livewith_vanilla:
Good luck and may your dream comes true.I have just submitted my DSA application into NJC.
Jennifer:
Agreed, no point in making any comparisons as different IP schools offer different programmes, different school fees, different sizes of cohort intake, different locations, different missions, different intake stages (some take Year 3, year 5- \"O\" graduates), different COP due to affiliation of their own feeder primary schools, compulsory boarding programmes or not, different criteria for DSA applicants etc.If I am not wrong, NJC does not consider DSA under sports domain. So, don't waste your time to compare them.I hv not idea since it is very difficult to compare IP sch these days.

I'm not exaggerating,my mom and dad says that my scores should not have a 7_ but only the 8_ and 9_.I've got that 7 digit for the tens placing before, they gave me such a long lecture.livewith_vanilla:

About the boarding school programme-I once share a room with two other classmates. There were two single beds in that room, seperated by a drawer.Hence,I shared the bed with a girl, while the other gets her own bed. I'm used to sharing rooms at home too. Nice food?Disagree at times. No more nagging? Well sort of,except that they could always SMS or call me... Freedom? I don't think you get much freedom in boarding..
About the quoting, will post in another post.Have to go back to so many pages. But basically its the parents' commenting that JH1 students don't really get much homework, come home still can read books etc.
My Merit is those very low-score merit.Considered very bad for my class.
About the fees, I know that some IP schools are government schools.
I'm not succumbing to peer influence. That friend tried convincing me to go to NJC in early April, but I stubbornly refused.Namely because I was attracted to NYGH and RGS. It was only after reading the threads, comparing the points of each school, did I chose NJC.
Thanks for the luck Vanilla Cake.Your sister is lucky to have such a big sister like you. -

To the parent who raised this about sharing rooms ... having shared rooms before would have an impact on this in boarding school??? my son shares a room with 2 siblings at home - i guess he'll be happy to have the extra space in boarding school then! haha!!!...<snip>....

About the amount of homework - i must say it varies. There may be lesser homework, but more projects and presentations, and that involves group meetings on-site as well as online. after the initial 'honeymoon', my boy, by Term 2, was up until 10 -11pm each nite completing their assignments plus studying for tests. Regular school classes for him ends anything between 3.30pm to 6pm (longer than mainstream secondary schools). And then he has CCA around 2x to 4x a week, staying back until 7pm for some CCAs(eg. canoeing) and 8 or 9pm for some other CCAs when there are performances. And that's why he has to work later into the night for his schoolwork. He's disciplined enough to get to school early most mornings (before 7am) so that he can finish up anything that he didn't manage to the night before, including the days when school only starts 8.30am.
So can't say it's really all that free. -

Agreed.
I think I am one of the mums who posted \"come home still can read books\". My boy has no sch CCA, unlike phankao's boy. So for my boy, it is straight to home after sch or sch project discussions.
Relaxed or not really depends on individual.
We were also influenced into choosing NJC after talking to a JH1 girl last year. During the orientation, we found out that she is one of the OGL. I believe her views were biased. Come to think of this, she kept saying NJ is very fun, the sch organised many fun activities. As for my boy, to him all schs are the same. He only does not want all boys sch n not too far from home.
Btw, are you aware that JH1 n JH2 must take HCL? I find the way HCL is taught in NJC does not prepare my boy well for sec sch lvl vocabulary. Hence we changed the tuition from compo to enrichment in term 2.
All the best to your dsa application. -

Hahas,I don't have anything to say now. Actually, comparing the timing, homework load is hard. Its just typical Singapore schools.I wonder which schools in Singapore have a relaxed schedule with no/minimum homework,no projects etc.

I prefer projects to homework anytime though.Like working with people, hearing the different thoughts and cracking some jokes. -
As for the boarding programme, we can only tell in term 4 (JH1 boards in term 4).
