Hi parents. May I check how is MSG calculated? I know about weightage for each WA (10%, 15%, 15%, 60%) but not sure whether the calculation takes into consideration the raw score or only the grades (A1, A2 etc)? Thank you.

MSG for NYGH is calculated only using the grades (A1, A2 etc). My understanding is limited, but MSG is calculated by adding up the numbers in the grade (A1 = 1 and A2 = 2), account for the weightage of each subject and then divide by the number of subjects.

LA is double weighted. History + Geography is half weighted each because it is a single subject. -

All subjects should be of equal weightage. No more double weightage for LA. But do note the difference in weightage between P1, P2 and P3 when calculating the final score. But for msg calculation, LA is same weightage as other subjects.

After all that weightage for each WA is taken into consideration, you get a final score for that subject at the end of the year in the report book. That score translates to A1 (75 and above), A2 (70 to 74), B3 ...

MSG = the average of all these scores (A1 = 1 pt, A2 = 2 pts, B3 = 3 pts).
And yes, all subjects are of equal weightage - no double weightage for languages or maths or science or humanities. -

Didn't know NYGH has changed the MSG calculation format. -
Hi all,
To those experienced NYGH parents, what are the risks of not taking Physics in Sec 3?
My dd is planning to do Double Science, Double Humans for 8 subj combi. Her Math is fairly ok, but she struggles with HCL. With the MSG 3.0 requirement for promotion to HCI in Sec 4, I’m maybe worried that taking Physics will drag down her MSG. Plus she will have both HCL and Physics to cope.
Would not taking Physics as Triple Sci combi affect her future options? She qualifies for it in previous year/terms. -

Perhaps you already know but just to reiterate that for promo to hci in year 5, you only the best L2R5 (at least 1 humanities, 1 maths and 1 science) to hit min 3.0 msg so actually the worse subject (other than languages) need not be considered in the computation.

Whether physics important or not depends on whether what subject combi she's gonna take in A levels cos most take double science 1 maths and 1 humanities (science stream). If she likes chem and bio instead, then go for it but do remember both are content heavy subjects compared to physics. If she is below 2.0msg, she can take up to 9 subjects and then you can take triple sci and double humanities. Some prefer this option of trying out the sciences before deciding which ones to specialise for jc. -
Just to add on, whether you should take Physics or not depends very much on what courses you want to take in university. I think certain engineering courses require the student to have taken Physics at A level which in turn means the student would need to take Physics at upper secondary level.

ah thanks, swc and imp75!
think that in the past HCI made it compulsory to do Physics for Upper Sec 3 and 4. If the boys’ side made it compulsory, they must think it’s important! -

It's probably the mindset on boys being good at physics and also suitable for future engineering career, that's why the school made that decision. Not sure if it applies to NYGH.
