Whichever policy is in place, they can’t please everyone.
Those at the top will want the papers to be hard to sieve out the potential competitors. Wun-wun-jia-bee-hoon go into their dream top schools.
Those who are on the borderline will want the papers to be easier so they have a chance to squeeze into the said top schools.
Those who are below that will want the papers to be super easy so that it is fair and everyone has a chance – even balloting also shiok.
And some just want to get by so that their kids can manage the stress and are not interested in the competition in which they are the collateral damage.
At the end of the day, RI only has X number of places. Whether it is the T-score or AL band or some future magic formula, they can only accept X students so there needs to be a cut-off somewhere.
The alternative is rebrand all the schools; either number them Schools #1, #2, …. Or just have one massive RI with branches throughout Singapore la. -

For sci mcq, there was a qn on steam bun with liquid filing. What caused the bun to burst when heated ? There were 2 possible options:
- liquid filing expanded
-air in the bun expanded
The obvious ans seems to be liquid filing expanded but is this a trick qn? Could also be that there was air trapped in the bun and could have caused it? Out if syllabus but air expands more than liquid...
What do u think?

(a) If the kid tries for the big 4, he/ she will face a mix of students. It's true that some of them are really good, but it's also true that some of them are really lousy by studies/ academic standards.
If the kid tries for O levels or another IP, the same thing happens, some really good and some really lousy.
It's not that straightforward.
If what you are concerned is the proportion of the students in the \"really good\" category in that cohort, this is at best confined to studies/ academic matters.
(b) If the line of thought is only in terms of studies/ academic work, it may not spill into other aspects. Being holistic in development is a key aspect. E.g. independence developments of a kid, school and kid match, emotional/ mental well-being, even in the case where you may not want to rate the \"distance from home\" factor high enough.
In short, the intimate understanding from parents about a kid goes a long way to bringing out the best in him/ her. That 'best' is what parents are actually looking for. -

Agree. Having had kids in the top 4...I can't emphasise enough....you better be sure your kid is that calibre or else the pressure and being surrounded by the cream can really kill your self esteem. These kids don't need the hardest concepts explained ....they literally pick up as its being taught the first time. No explanation required. They literally come home and recap. I've never given tution to either of my kids nor do they ask for help. Both have excelled. Not bragging just explaining the calibre that's required. The thing is that their syllabus is mostly year 5 year 6 jc level work. Good luck with it[/quote]I also noticed same thing, my children used to be dependent on me in their study during primary school appear to mature when they went sec school in the top 4, they become self-reliant, know when to study, when to play, how to plan to study for tests, exams etc. I only look into their results nowadays. But I don't see they are under any kind of induced pressure, in fact, everyday, they look forwards to go to school.

For parents wondering whether his/her DC can qualify for RI / RGS / NYGS / HCI, the Edusave Scholarships for Independent Schools (ESIS) will be a good reference point. ESIS is offered to top one-third students who are eligible for Independent Schools. In past years under T-score scheme, the cut-off for ESIS is often very close to the COP for these 4 top schools.
I think once we "lock down" the COP for the top 4 schools, we can add incremental AL points to other schools based on the 2020 COP published by MOE, e.g. SCGS COP will be ESIS cut-off + 2 (because COP of RI & RGS is 6 while that of SCGS is 8 in 2020). This could be a possible methodology to make some sense from the black box.
