When will we know the subjects that the child enrolled to? I know my child selected some advance and heard there is selection exam

The girls who want to take advanced subjects have to finish the selection tests first. Then those who pass the selection tests will receive notification. Then all the girls will submit their combination choices. Then notified of their combi allocated to them. Detailed timeline should have been provided to all the sec 2 students. I remember the whole process ended sometime 3rd week of Nov.

Need help. My daughter doesn’t know what subjects to choose (between history or physics) and I also don’t know how to advice. Need help from parents out there.

Her sec1/2 science is good and consistent A1. History flunctates ie B3. My husband and I thought that physics is a tough subject and history is easier in our humble opinion (based on our era). We worried if she doesn’t do well, her sec4 scores can be pulled down. However my daughter feels her science is better.

Any advice pls

Hmm…come to think of it, subject combination does not need any parent consent right? So up to our girl to discuss and seek our inputs if they are welcomed:)


Pertaining to SMTP, my understanding is that it is not a separate SIA. To be in SMTP simply means they need to do 2 advanced sciences or 1 advanced sci and advanced math, and their SIA must be science or math related, like SMP. SMP I think is the time consuming one as it requires them to go to say NUSH twice a week to meet mentors and do their research work. 2 whole weeks during the June holidays will be spent at NUSH or wherever their research work is done. Of course this does not include the time for group discussion and individual research. There is also some science SIA which seems to be a tie up with some Japanese school and past years the girls in this SIA get to go Japan for some exchange.

For advanced science selection test, for this year chem and bio is written test 1hr each, physics is interview.

These are the bits and pieces I could get from my girl.. not a complete picture as teens don’t appreciate too much parental interference these days

History syllabus now is very different from our era. In our era, if you have a good memory, it is easy to score for History. But the History now requires application of source-based skills. The girls have to analyse a series of sources given, ranging from excerpts from books, political speeches, historical documentation to political cartoons, then answer a series of short essay questions whereby they have to determine the reliability, provenance, purpose, etc of the sources. This type of questions forms half the paper. Lower sec History is quite easy compared to upper sec History, so if she is already averaging B3 in lower sec, she might struggle even more in upper sec.

I can't comment much on Physics as my DD does not take that in upper sec.

Hello octbride! Apologies for barging in. I'd agree with swc. My dc1 (a different IP 🏫) took upper sec PH, & could score even though he did not like the subject much. My dc2 (another IP 🏫) is confident in MA, & found upper sec PH comparatively more manageable amongst the sciences. They chose their own subjects based on what interested them, which would hone varied skills, Not the grades. Imho, HI is a wonderful training ground for critical analysis (my dc2 is a lazy thinker, but he totally enjoyed HI; & the skills, I feel, transfer to LA/ research - interdisciplinary? haha). So if your child does not have another subject to expend critical-energy, HI is an awesome option (a lot more essay writings I suppose, compared to PH). So it really depends on your child's priorities, preferences... All the best!!

Becos you did not specify how many subj your gal is considering, it is very difficult to advise.
For Sec 3, they will take all subj scores for promotion. Only in Sec 4 is L2R5. R5 - 1 Maths, 1 Sci, 1 Humanity and 2 other best subj. If there’s only 1 humanity, then you must ensure she’s ok with that. For Physics, if your gal is also looking to take in JC, then you ought to take it in Sec. Only Sci subj that you can take later is Bio n min grade is Chemistry B3.
Rest is to discuss with your gal and discuss about her interest or passion. Else, take the max and dropped “it” later (but ideally not).
