In a comparison, School X without any affiliation with a COP of say AL10 vs School Y with COP of AL18 for affiliates while AL8 for non-affiliates, I wonder if the students of different AL scores are mixed for each express class, how different is the learning environment between School X and School Y? Note only 20% of the quota are reserved for non-affiliates in School Y. Theoretically overall the students in general in the former group are of better PSLE scores. Will it be more stressful in School X than in School Y? Any thought and experience to share? Thank you.

Those affiliated schools that I know, they will spread out the non-affiliated students into the various classes, so that each class has both affiliated and non-affiliated students.

So if you think about it, the incoming non-affiliated students (let’s say they score 8 points) will turn out to be the top few (academically) in the class at school Y.
If the 8-pointer chooses a COP 10 school X, won’t be the bottom few, maybe closer to the middle.
I don’t think it makes much difference in any case. Choose based on whether u think your child can fit into the school’s culture. Generally a more sociable child will be able to easily assimilate into a school that has close to 80% affiliated students. -

FWIW, I believe there is a reasonable chance some of the non-affiliated AL COPs are going to be more demanding than the indicative AL COPs. Reason being is that I think more affiliated kids will qualify under the AL AMR than the number that qualified under the corresponding affiliated t-score COP (not saying this is good or bad). If you were below the affiliated t-score COP, it would have made little sense to put the school on your S1 Option Form so these kids were likely not picked up in the simulation (even if they had an AL score that qualified under the new rules). However, the wider AL Banding may enable some additional affiliated students to qualify now and their actual S1 option form in 2021 will reflect this, which if true obviously means fewer spots for the non-affiliated (s.t. the 80% cap on affiliates). How large of an impact is this? Who knows.

Also, I think the relative position of an AL8 in School Y will also depend on exactly which school we are talking about. Generally I agree that an AL8 will be towards the top, but in the past some of the affiliated schools retained some very high t-score kids in the affiliated O-Level program. Most likely, this same behavior will exist under AL (preference for O and staying in the same school despite having options to go elsewhere). It may also be the case that the median student in each of the situations above is fairly similar. I would also generally agree that the relative range of scores or lack thereof probably isn't the main factor I would hang my hat on when deciding between School X or School Y. -

Third language is definitely not essential and is unlikely to give anyone an unsurmountable advantage vs. their peers. However, the simple part in bold is often lost in these discussions, and many kids take the class and do well simply out of interest. I doubt anyone would say it's a waste of time to take an external class/hobby out of interest, even though it takes up time and makes managing a schedule a bit tougher (vs. simply evaluating what it does for JC, uni, etc). Similarly, one can get a lot of joy out of AEP or MEP without needing to be the next Picasso or Beethoven (or do something with Art or Music for their career).

Language learning is fun and easy, regardless of whether or not it's at MOELC. The seniors who are holding the RGPS language webinar are going to open it up and share more about tips and other things surrounding third language and MOELC. It's really wasted to let go of this opportunity to learn something new. Even if you don't want to pick up a third language, you should probably attend the webinar to make an educated decision.

Much applause if you are one of the students holding a webinar for your prior primary school P6s. I do think there is a lot to consider and it is definitely not for everyone, but such events will allow the P6s to make a more informed decision. Based on what I've observed, many kids can handle it in Sec 1 and Sec 2 as long as the internal interest is there. However, for many of them I think the question will be whether it (Third Language) still ranks high enough for them in upper secondary when they have additional options available, and they may want to start to specialize in a specific subject. -
Regarding AMR (Affiliate Minimum Requirement), just wondering:
Has any of the schools told their P6s of their AMR which is NOT the same as the MOE simulated cut off point?
I recall there was some discussion previously, and so far all these schools (correct me if I’m wrong) have declared their Express (O level) stream AMR is as follows (tallies with the indicative COP):
- ACS Barker Road: 22 (non-affiliated 11)
- ACS Independent: 13 (non-affiliated 9)
- Catholic High: 12 (non-affiliated 9M)
- CHIJ TPY: 20 (non-affiliated 10)
- CHIJ St Nicks: 14 (non-affiliated 8M)
- Fairfield: 20 (non-affiliated 11)
- MGS: 17 (non-affiliated
- SCGS: 17 (non-affiliated 9)
