I went on a little, looking at the 2021 Phase 2C data. I added the 20 additional places to Phase 2C, with no changes to the earlier phases.

The list shows the schools that are most likely to require balloting in 2022. Note that the 20 places was added without subtracting them from earlier phases, so in fact, we are very likely to see a lot more schools requiring balloting next year. But these are the schools that are already in the red before we make any adjustments, so they are more likely to require balloting.

At the top of the list is Princess Elizabeth, followed by Northland Primary, which is almost always in this list every year. The huge number of schools in this list tell us that even with the additional 20 seats in Phase 2C, the problem of balloting does not go away.

Today, we look at the total number of places for Phase 2A1 and 2A2, removed 20 places from the schools for these 2 phases, and then subtracted the number of applicants. So this is a simulation of what the balloting situation will be like at the end of Phase 2A next year.

We only show schools with negative numbers; ie. the negative numbers show the number of applicants who did not get a place in the school for Phase 2A1 or 2A2.

Looking at this chart may bring people a sigh of relief. There is only a handful of schools that do not have enough places to accommodate all the demand in Phase 2A. And even though St Nicholas' has a shortfall of 64 seats this year, in 2019, it was not on this list :rahrah: So there might be some hope this year... :xedfingers:

In fact, I can only see 2 schools consistently in this list: Nanyang Primary and Catholic High.

Whatever it is, unless you are foolhardy or have no choice, you should plan to EXCLUDE these schools from your calculations. These are probably the most popular schools in Singapore.

I think there is a problem with the numbers for the schools that are already oversubscribed or has just the right number of applicants as places in phase 2A1 and therefore bypassed phase 2A2 altogether.

For example in 2021, this includes 6 schools (Catholic High, CHIJ St Nicholas, Nanyang, Rosyth, Pei Hwa and Ai Tong). There would have definitely been more applicants than the stated had there been a combined Phase 2A because those who don’t qualify for 2A1 but qualify for 2A2 would have applied as they would have stood the same chance under the new rules.

There might have been some schools that bypassed phase 2A1 in 2020 or earlier but not 2021, I didn’t look carefully. So in fact the situation for these schools could be actually worse than it appears from the numbers that you have provided.

Indeed, there would probably be more applicants for those 6 schools you mentioned, if Phase 2A2 is still opened. But we will just be guessing at the numbers then 😂 Anyway, this is the best that we can project. I hope MOE has more data to project the outcome for this year's PSLE results, than what we have with P1 registration. :xedfingers: Somehow, I don't feel very comfortable with that \"only 10% of people balloting\".

Hello, would like to get some opinions please -

My husband and I are alumni from peichun and St Hildas. Both grandparents live within 2km of both schools and will be doing the pickups/caregiving during after school hours. If we use the grandparents address as caregivers, I understand we will be considered as the SC 1-2km priority.

              1) which do you think has a higher chance of getting in at Phase 2A SC 1-2km? I looked at the historical data and minused away 20 spots - both schools will require balloting but I do not know the breakdown in terms of the home distance of applicants. We did not do PV anywhere so if we do not get in at Phase 2A, we will be applying for Phase 2C at other schools since both pcps and shps will already require balloting for SC <1km for Phase 2C.

              2) any thoughts about sending your child to pcps vs shps? Pros and cons that we can think of - pcps is strong in Mandarin, shps has a very nurturing and Christian environment (we are Christians).
              - How are the current academic strengths like? I read on previous forum posts that pcps does not give out much homework now - I guess that's a good thing? I also heard from parents of existing pupils in shps that their academics aren't as top as before?
              - it seems like shps CCA options are more than pcps?
              - both principals look good from what I can see online
              - any other considerations that I should be thinking about?

Thanks in advance for reading my long post. Been thinking a lot about it and would like to tap on the collective wisdom of all gurus here who have been there done that or are also in the same situation! 🙂

The number of oversubscriptions for Pei Chun and St Hilda's are mapped above. The tables show the total number of oversubscribed people at each of the phases in the p1 exercise.

They are both very similar in terms of demand, and although St Hilda's did have 3 oversubscription last year compared to Pei Chun's 8 last year in Phase 2A2, given that Phase 2A is losing 20 seats, both schools are likely to be over 20 seats oversubscribed in Phase 2A if the trend continues

Of course, there are years where either schools have no balloting, but those times are long gone.

It's probably too late now for you, but for others who are in your same situation, there might be better hope in Phase 2B for Pei Chun than St Hilda's.

Oh wait. I forgot... you will be balloting between 1-2km for Phase 2A. So far, all the balloting for the schools at Phase 2A has been >2km. So you are safe, but the unknown here is whether that 20 spots reduction may affect you.

Thanks chief kiasu! Yah, we didn’t apply for PV or whatever cos we thought sure get in at Phase 2A1. Did not expect the curveball to hit us at all lol.

Any thoughts abt pcps vs shps in terms of the other aspects?

Sorry. I cannot give you comments on how the schools compare besides looking at the registration data, as it will be quite subjective and may not be accurate as my experiences might be skewed. But others may do so. In any case, you guys are ALUMNI of the schools! I'm sure you know the schools better than me 😂

Haha yes, but I was thinking if our understanding is outdated hence wanted to get fresh perspectives. After all it's been 20-30 years!
