When school took in DSA through sport, it is based on assessment from coaches from respective CCA, based on talent. I am not sure if the schools did make assessment of their result, but as far as I knew, if the student is offered by the school, and the student accepted, and if his or her psle is above 200, then there is no issue with the DSA admission.

I just clarified with my elder DD, in RGS if u failed to meet GPA requirement (set at 60%), u will be retained in sec 4 and repeat 1 year, still failed again, u will be out. In NYGH, u will go into SIP, structured IP, which is actually O level. Nygh uses MSG and set at 65% for promotion in sec 4. The school has actually weed out the weaker students into SIP, so all actually met the grade into HCJC.

I am not to say that they will eventually drop off to do o level, but some did so. However, a good no of them went on to the partner JC.
To inform u, nygh offered Malay special program in house, and from what I knew from elder DD, Chinese students in RGS takes HCL, although in nygh it is default.

Indeed, my DD does have a classmate who dsa in through basketball and my DD did tell me her psle score is 240+. But does not mean she will eventually do o level as still in sec 1 going sec 2.

Indeed this opinion and observation seems rather misleading and lopsided. It is about time parents and students alike adopt a growth mindset and accept that every child who has managed to get into the school (especially IP school) has earned the spot based on his or her merit, whether by psle score or their dsa talents. Today’s dsa system is much more robust and the selection panel has also fine tuned their selection process over the years. If parents continue to think that their own kids who went in by psle score are “better” than their counterparts who went in by dsa, their kids will form that impression too and inevitably only look out for classmates who fit that image in their class. Today’s society is much more vibrant and there are many pathways to success, we have to teach our children to adopt an open mind and learn from others who have successfully earn a spot by their own means, and not just to rely on the good old method of entry selection, ie only academic results. We have to change with the times in order to equip our children with updated ideas and beliefs.

A successful (present day) entrepreneur Jack Ma of Alibaba once said this - I told my son: you don’t need to be in the top three in your class, being in the middle is fine, so long as your grades aren’t too bad. Only this kind of person [a middle-of-the-road student] has enough free time to learn other skills.

Let’s move with the times and impart the right mindset to our children. And open their eyes to the brand new world that they are living in.

Hello, I think just let your child try it out whatever your child chooses…. It is ok not to do so well, it is important to let them try it out. For those who manage to get into the IP school by ALs, don’t assume that it will be a breeze when you studying in the IP school. Unless the child keep trying, he or she will not be able to reap the wonderful programs available in these schools. It was a journey to go through the 6 years with my daughter who went to RGS, now she is taking her A level. Also, my son is in HCI now, next year doing Sec 2. Both of them, chose their school. They got to take responsibility from what they have decided. There are ups and downs for my daughter when she was in RGS. Also, for my son, He too was trying very hard last year. Both of them got in with their T score.

I remember when I attended RGS DSA briefing a few years back, the statistic given was less than 30 has exited RGS since the introduction of IP program in RGS. Not 20+ per year definitely.

Regarding IP dropout rate, ST reported that roughly around 6% of 4000 IP students exit the program midway through. That’s about 240 per year.

If RGS has only fewer than 30 IP dropouts in history since the introduction of IP, ohh…. then it’s a pretty amazing achievement

I think maybe swc is saying 30 dropped out of RGS instead of exited RGS IP? I recall reading an article years ago about DSA IP students having to take o levels, probably due to poor results and then didn’t perform well in the Os.

But for these 6% dropout, assuming before Sec 4, surely they will receive some tutoring on the o levels syllabus right? Actually how different exactly is O levels and IP syllabus?

What I heard from my friends seem to be they will usually retain the student for another year if they cannot be promoted. Asking them to leave the school tbh would be quite rare. I know they used to have an olevel class but am not sure if they still provide it nowadays.

To me, I would classify this as “exiting the program”.
But I think, to the school, this would not be classified as exiting the program. Because if they are counting these, how can there be fewer than 30 since 2006? I think they are only counting those that have been made to leave. And this would be a small number.

And quoting the number for those made to leave, is also not wrong from an open house / publicity point of view, because the school cant control those who leave on their own (struggling or not). Clearly the school thinks they are allowed to stay (same year or promote) but they chose to leave.
