2021 PSLE Discussions and Strategies (Children born in 2009)
-
I saw some earlier discussions that under this year system, may be better for those with AL6 to select only 1, either RGS or NYGHS, as 1st choice and then select a safety net school (COP AL7, AL8) as 2nd choice, whereas in past years the decision could be 1st and 2nd choices as RGS and NYGHS since school choice order does not matter and top schools get filled up first before the rest.
Plus survey results are showing majority of those less than AL10 are having, AL6 and AL8. Understand survey results not 100% of the cohort, it may skew towards children with better AL due to their KS parents.
Just wondering cos of safety net thinking, will it be possible that top 2 schools RGS NYGHS may not get totally filled up because some AL6 may not want to go through balloting risks. And inadvertently caused their "safety net" schools eg RVHS, NJC, SCGS etc to be super hard to get in this year and squeeze out the AL7 and AL 8, leaving 0 chance for AL9? -
Hi all ,
My dd too has got AL8+D and very keen to apply DHS as her 1st choice. But thinking about those DSA applicants and we do not have info on the rough number of S1 intake there , so it is extremely difficult to decide on it. Please help! -

Yes, what you describe is possible. The paradox is if everyone thinks School X is risky at AL6 (or whatever) and everyone avoids it, those who actually \"risk it\" won't face that bad of odds. Similarly, even if everyone \"risks it\" those who get ballot out will not be at a disadvantage because everyone will be on their second choice for School Y.

If it is me, I will just go for the school(s) I want as long as I have a few choices below that I am happy with.
I think the one scenario where choice and risk matters a lot is if you think School X has bad ballot odds at AL6 but School Y has good ballot odds at AL6. You prefer School X to School Y but you prefer School Y to everything else in a stronger way. In this case, I may just put School Y first.
But no one knows what the distribution of AL scores is THIS YEAR. We can gleen some information from the past but 2021 PSLE is a new scoring system and students may have targeted their studies/prep in a different manner from years past which will result in a different distribution of scores and thus different COPs and ballot risk from what was given (or somewhat implied) in the INDICATIVE AL COPs. -

My DD said it is 103, 203 next year. She said 101, 112 are elective program/talent prog classes, 102 and 103 are pure GEP students who DSA in. For those GEP students who got in through PSLE score , same as them in normal classes total 8 classes.
Agree about the importance of Chinese... same as what I have been telling my kids.darwinkoh\" post_id=\"2048542\" time=\"1637891804\" user_id=\"99637:
Just to add, chinese is an important language now and in future due to rise in China, I believe all kids should take effort to master the language. MY younger DD in NYGH, there is an Ang Mo student, in GEP class, her chinese is so good that her chinese compo is listed under their annual publication of best compo selection. We chinese should strive to master the language. That Ang Mo student is the younger DD of Jim Roger, the investment guru. Her bigger DD had already progressed into HCJC year 1.
Jim Roger's younger DD is in class 111 or 112? Students in those 2 classes are all aiming for MSG = 1.00.
She uses å°čč as her chinese written name! Her english name is short formed Bee Roger, her bigger sister in HCJC is called Happy Roger.
May I know what classes were the DSA students (academic) allocated to last year? mainstream pupils -

S1 intake for DHS is slightly more than 300 of which probably 25-30% of the cohort is admitted via DSA.
Hi all ,
My dd too has got AL8+D and very keen to apply DHS as her 1st choice. But thinking about those DSA applicants and we do not have info on the rough number of S1 intake there , so it is extremely difficult to decide on it. Please help! -

I think you should have been informed about the AMR. If the AMR is 8M, then you put nygh as first choice, and the total number of nyps who put nygh as first choice is within the quota, then you should get in. If quota set aside for nyps who put nygh as first choice, is filled by 8D and better, then you will not get in.
My daughter scored 8(M) and has affliation to NYGH whose indicative COP is 8(M) for affliated students. May i ask what are her chances? Do affliated students get priority over other students who scored better AL scores? Appreciate any insights.
Do affliated students get priority over other students who scored better AL scores?
Nygh sets aside a fixed number of vacancies for the nyps students, this number is according to the percentage dictated by MOE. This percentage thing is the same as 2019 and 2020 psle. -

There's no need to forget DHS based on DSA intake. Most IP schools will have a similar DSA intake.

If unsuccessful at DHS, Chung Cheng High Main (AL11(M)) is a SAP/O-Level school nearby you can try if your child is interested in Chinese.
Good luck!
