Wondering what was the original intent of the ESIS but now it seems like using taxpayers’ money to subsidise rich kids (as AL4 and AL5 kids definitely skew towards those from higher SES families).

1200 kids get $200 per month for 6 years will mean $17.28 mil per batch. These funds might be better spent on kids on the other end of the spectrum, as it is a well known fact that they are worst hit by the pandemic and the effects can be life-long. MOE should set a income cap for ESIS.
ESIS is literally edusave award for independent schools. It is awarded to Singaporean student in top 3% psle cohort who apply to study in independent school only. As independent school school fee is high, it is a way of lowering the school fee to a level close to government aided school for Singaporean students. Students in government aided school already receive similar subsidy. With ESIS, the students will no longer be eligible for the normal edusave awards such as edusave scholarship, bursary, leadership, eagle etc in government aided schools.

Most independent schools' students are from middle class.

I think no point arguing with the strong believer of t-score and AL correlation, any other sane person would have rest their case if there are so many people speaking up against them, unless one is deriving strong (and strange) pleasure from it. So you are only feeding into that strange pleasure by continuing. Only step in if there are unknowing parties who appear to be have been misled.

          Hi in simple terms , i don’t know about t score/ SD… etc…

can I say that MOE translates for example School A cohort into AL scoring ( for 2020 PSLE ).
School A Last space student in 2020 scored 257 for PSLE
But if each cohort where converted to AL scoring There might be AL8 ( example ) , in that case AL8 is considered as the last space available .

Which means that AL8 is not the 257 ?

Cos MOE looked into each student’s AL in that school. So they rank accordingly 4,5,6,7,8
          Not 276,273…….258,257,256

As for tie breaker rules, MOE didn’t take it for 2020. They will start only for 2021 PSLE student . Since there’s no longer T score .

Won’t it be better then to award the subsidy to all students who gain a place in independent schools instead of the top 1/3 and set an income cap (such that it’s still 1/3 of students enjoying the subsidy)

Actually how does the 3% number come about ar? I suddenly thought of it, and looks like number didn't match.

              * MOE said ESIS given to top 1/3 of students admitted to independent school by PSLE scores.
              * If ESIS given to top 3%, then it implies independent school intake is 9-10% of cohort?
              * And we always say 10% top of cohort is eligible for IP
              * There are currently 8 independent schools in Singapore, and 16 IP/IB schools (including the 8 independent school)

Maybe ESIS is given to 1.5% or 2% of cohort only?

              Confuse.. :scratchhead:

Not all of the 3% eligible for ESIS choose to go independent schools.

                  Totally agree.

Not correcting a misconception doesn’t mean the strong believer is right. It simply means we decided to stop trying. Parents please make your own judgement and be guided accordingly.

You are right. It makes sense if you think like that..

Frankly speaking, I am quite disappointed with this morning discussion.

Despite my advices last night, my findings are :

                      1. Parents are still insist that the other parties is "not correct and their believe is a misconception"
                      2. No Stepping Stone or "Face" are given to each others.
                      3. Some wordings are even involved some degree of "Personal Attacks"
                      4. An original 2 persons fight become multi parties fight.

As our kids will learn and follow how their parents deal with people and tackle disputes with other.
Cannot imagine how they can operate with their future colleagues. Sigh.

I am surprised to see this topic turned to a brawl of "who is right". In my honest opinion, there is not right or wrong - S1 registration is a process involving supply and demand - and students/parents’ perceptions towards the process will change the process itself.

I see no point arguing further and every piece of past information can only be "indicative", and that’s why each student is given 6 choices. Use them wisely and every student shall have a relatively matching school to go.

The only thing that I believe is certain to happen - there will be some parents/students (although in small percentage) who will get disappointed at being balloted out of their dream school. However if we keep our mind open and don’t hang on one tree, the life will be much easier. An AL6 student who doesn’t manager to get into big4 but instead enters DHS, CHS is equally successful.

                        Cheers up lads.
