Some thoughts:
#1. RI/RGS appear to have only taken in SC at AL6. As mentioned earlier, it would be interesting to know the odds here. Like others (and based on prior scores/COPs), my guess is the odds were not very good but there is definitely a bias to those who ballot out speaking up more. Going forward, I would say there’s a better chance we will see AL5 with likely ballot for PR/IS (SC should be safe) than AL6 for PR/IS (of course, could also stay at AL6 SC for a while).
#2. Would be interesting to hear from more people that met COP and were ballot out of first choice. I.e. based on prior replies ACS(I), HCI, and SCGS IP first choice at COP did not necessarily make it. Not sure about other IP schools like MGS IP, SNGS IP, NJC, Cedar, VS IP, CHS IP, TJC, RVHS, SJI, DHS? My sense is AL8 extended beyond Top 10%, and I am interested whether AL8 gave you only one try at IP school (if don’t like CL and RVHS option) or were there any students at the COP and second choice that got in?
#3. In general, I understand why people don’t like balloting but it is what it is. However, people need to remember that under t-score you could have missed it by 1 t-score point and no chance to ballot. Rightly or wrongly, it seems like most who ballot out assume they would have made it under t-score.
#4. Overall, the AL system itself is neither adding nor subtracting stress from parents/students. Those that are hyper sensitive to the scoring/posting will always be stressed. In contrast, many others are happy to "try your best and whatever you get is what you get."
That being said, I do think the AL system is "randomizing" the group of top scorers a bit more than under t-score (not saying this is good or bad). There will definitely be kids that score AL4 or AL5, but I think many of these kids are walking a tight-rope (around 90) on the third and/or forth subject. A couple/few points higher or lower and the posting outcome changes dramatically (even more so than a couple/few t-score points). -

Actually, it's the same under t-score because the number of students getting into RI or RGS each year is the same and selection is purely on academic results only.
This is stressful! How many kids can get AL5 that allows only 1 subject to be below 90% (but still need it to be >= 85%)?
Which means that one must be a high-performing all-rounder coz every year there’ll be a killer paper or two set. Sweat!
Under AL system, with AL6, there is still an outside chance. Even 5% chance it's still a chance. For those who fail to get AL5, then AL6 will be good enough for all other schools and that IMO is already very respectable. -

AL9 is still a very good score. Target the schools which are open to your child, and not the ones which are taken up by the top scorers, and you will be fine.
This year, I am saddened to know AL9 without higher Chinese, practically no where to go.
Those go in by DSA and score as Low as AL21 are laughing at those kids with AL9 and above. If I am not mistaken, the intake for DSA increased a lot compare to last year, which result AL9 has no IP school to go. It will most likely increase it’s intake further in 2022 which may cause those students, who get AL8, to cry foul.
If you don’t take any action now for your younger kids my bet is, AL8 will be next victim.
Remember, your child is the MOST important, NOT the school. Imagine yourself being surrounded by people all smarter than you. That is how your child feels if he gets into a school that is beyond his intellect, and he has to feel this everyday for at least 4 years :sad: Isn't it better than he gets into a school where he and his friends are of the same wavelength, and the teachers are all tuned to his frequency? -
Here is a comparison between 2020 indicative COP vs 2021 Actual COP (to be verified)
One 2 IP schools saw a change in AL COP (excluding HCL grade change). ie. MGS and TJC.
There are now 6 AL7 COP IP schools (some required HCL some not)
And only 1 AL9 IP schools left which is RVHS (HCL is required)

Precisely, but this is not what many parents are thinking. Look how much they spend on the sport or enrichment, making sure their kids can get into top school thru DSA even though the result merely make it.

With TJC at AL8 now, those without MTL having scored AL1 for EL, AL1 Math and AL1 for Sc but got to be assigned AL6 for exempted MTL effectively would now be AL9 and has no IP school since no HCL for RVHS. They got to either DSA or try to transfer to IP school at end of Sec 1 or Sec 2 if they are still able to continue excelling in their other secondary level subjects

Not sure about that but I know that for NYGH, the COP went up from 7(M) to 7(D), causing my neighbor’s kid being cut-off
