Usually during orientation, the sec 1s will be rostered to try different CCAs and those who are show potential will have their names taken down and asked to come back for tryouts later. The kid can express

interest to the team and see what the seniors say.

for sports cca such as Judo etc, any idea if kids with no experience has chance of joining? my child would like to pick up Judo as a sport but likely may not qualify to represent the school in competitions

My son joined Judo without prior exposure to the sport and went on to be selected for national competitions. The coaching team is very experienced and will prepare the team well for competitions. It can be tough as there are 3 training sessions a week ( prior to Covid and fight hard for competition spots ( limited per weight category). In fact, the boys were disappointed when the school games had to be cancelled in the last 2 years.

CCAs in secondary school are competitive by nature, unlike in primary school where it's more to explore interest (this is something that'll be mentioned to them during CCA Orientation)

I would recommend going out for the trials to see if he has the potential/enjoys it as much as he thinks he would. If not, he should look for alternative CCAs.
