Attended the parent's briefing few weeks back and the principal did not disclose even when we asked. Not sure if this is a norm for other schools as well.
I think this \"fear\" of disclosure is getting ridiculous, and educators that do not disclose such information under the guise of wanting to reduce competition should be questioned. How would anyone know how well the school is doing, if there is no information? So we are supposed to guess by looking at the maximum AL scores that the school accept for Sec 1 students? Sheesh.

Perhaps the results weren’t ready since it was a few weeks back? Or discreetly ask teachers?

It was after the o level results released. The only information they shared is that 1 out of 2 qualified for JC/Poly (if I remember correctly). But I was hoping to see a statistic fig like how many get 4, 5 distinctions etc.

Actually, the statistics were available on the day the results were released. This new principal just did not want to disclose further during the parents' briefing.

If you are curious, you may like to wait for the Year Book to be distributed. The information you are looking for is usually published in the book.

The latest edition of the Year Book gives a good indication on the school's performance. Last year's batch performed slightly better than the batch before (that is, the statistics shown in the latest edition of the Year Book), but was slightly below than two batches before. So, overall, the school's O Level results have been quite consistent.

DS in Sec 3 triple science. Did really badly for Physics - failed in both WA1 and WA2. Will the school ask him to drop Physics?

From end of Sec 2 to Sec 3,
many students are struggling, trying to adapt to the big change in transition. During this Transition period, a number of Sec 3 students find it stressful, coupled with puberty / Adolescence. It is the same identical manner as last time at end of Primary 4, where there was a similar transition when P4 students were trying to adapt to the Upper primary P5 Moe syllabus. Will need some time to adapt, from Sec 2 to Sec 3.

Even if failed both weighted tests (WA1 + mid-year WA2), your son can still continue with S3 Physics, until end of this year.

After he gotten back his year end assesment Term 4 October results, he can discuss with u (parents), whether to drop Physics next year (2023 Sec 4), or not. Since he already tried out one full entire year in Physics this year(2022), by then, school will allow him drop, if this is what your son he himself wants. Important. The ownership to drop Physics, must come from he himself. He takes ownership. He takes the responsibility of dropping subject(s). He is a teenager now, at 15 year old. No longer a P6 kid.

After his Sec 3 Term 4 year end (October) exam is over, stay alert :-

                    1) if your son has decided that his future career / university course has got absolutely Nothing to do with Engineering, then let him drop. Otherwise, continue with Physics.

                    Meanwhile,
Sec 3 Term 2 has come to an end this week. Very fast ! Almost half a year is gone. The one month June school holiday is starting this Saturday (28 May). Quickly hire a good private tutor \"1 to 1 at home\", to help (guide) him, brush up all his weak concepts of understanding.

Ask the tutor to flip through his Sec 3 (WA1 + WA2) exam papers. From there, one can spot easily where his flaws (weakness) come (originate) from. Examine the way,

                    - how your son answered the Open ended Physics short structured questions from Section B and the longer, more challenging structured questions from Section C, SEAB Pure Physics subject code (6091).

                    2) if your son decided to drop Physics, let him remain inside the same current (Triple Science) class, where he is now. Do NOT change his class to a Double Science class, next year (2023).

                    Why ?

                    2a)

                    Has to do with emotion.

Because some students may feel shameful, \"paiseh\", after dropping, if they were to change (switch over) from a \"Triple\" Science to a \"Double\" Science class, is like downgrading, demotion effect.

                    Imagine, this scenario.
Let's say a pupil gets transferred out from Triple, to a Double Science class, next year (2023). You wouldn't want those new, insensitive \"kay poh\" Sec 4 students from the Double Science class to question a pupil during recess time, \"hey ! I thought you were in the Triple Science class, before last year. How come now, you end up in our Double Science Pure Chem & Pure Bio class ? \"

                    Depend on the pupil.
If a student can take it, just shrug off such questions asked by inquisitive, curious fellow classmates, then no issue. But, for some other students, if they can't take it emotionally, then, some other problem may crop up, which is even worse. (won't go into that)

                    2b)

If a pupil really want to drop, remain back inside the same Triple Science class, dont change class. 2 options, available.
When the school bell ring for Sec 4 Physics lessons,

                    I) either
remain at his own seat, wherever he is sitting currently, do his own things, just ignore whatever the Physics Teacher Is teaching in class, since he already dropped Physics, not taking O-level (Physics) anymore.

                    OR

II) go to the school library, and do his own study there.

                    3) parents, a word of caution.

Now is only mid-year, May month.
If you ask a student to drop a subject now, they may not be willing.

But, if u ask them to drop at year end and if they themselves are also willing & agreeable, then as parents, if u support them from behind, your child will appreciate u and will see u as their pillar of strength & support, in their Parent-child Relationship.

To drop a subject, is very easy.
What is difficult, is handling of his emotions.

                    4) this Friday (27 May) :-

many Secondary schools across Singapore, are having \"Parents-meet-Teachers\" session, as 27 May marks the end of Term 2 closure.

Besides talking to his Physics class Teacher, you may also want to speak to his Sec 3 (Form Teacher & the rest of his other subject Teachers too), find out how is he coping so far and also, how is his behavior in class / school ?

If he is also struggling with
(Additional-maths, Elementary-maths, Pure Bio, Pure Chem), is wise to drop Physics, at year end.

                    5) usually,
                    come (reach) year end,
more than one Sec 3 student amongst their cohort, will consider want to drop subject(s).

Re-assess the situation one more time, closer towards year end (October). That will be a more accurate final situation, to assess. Not now (only May month, half-way through)

Yes hire a tutor is a good approach. Recently I watch a current affairs show where our minister Josephine Teo was interviewed together with her mum informally. JT talked about her close relationship with her mum all these times. She mentioned an episode when she was Sec 2 or 3 (I can’t remember), she failed her A math test in early semester. Her mum arranged a tutor for her. And as the popular saying goes, the rest are history.

                        All the best
