The Alternative Story:
Hi TAS
Of course, you can also buy the books from us and get the
phrases free, haha.

Do you mean your center sells phrases books? A collection of phrases from various story books? -
The Alternative Story:
Hi sleepy,
Yes, the subject matter can be a little heavy for the lower primary kids.
But if we let them read the stories on this subject that end happily, it
is not as bad. Books like 'Number the Stars' has a happy ending and so
does not seem so heavy for the kids.
But if like what Pokemon says, your kid is interested in history, then these
books are great books to introduce them to as they will help broaden
a child's worldview.

Would you recommend Friedrich? This book is in GEP reading list. -
Brenda10:
Hi Brenda10,
Hi TAS
Yes. You're right. DD has good visual-spatial skills but displayed weak auditory discrimination.
BTW, she has started the first book \"Bang, Bang, You're Dead\". This is an interesting book and she enjoys it very much. She comments that the structure of the write out really gives her some good ideas for creative writing.
Thank you very much for your recommendation.
No problem! Glad she is enjoying it

Village Girl:
My girl is in P1 this year. Any book to get her interested in reading? She doesnt like reading. I brought her to bookshop and she always choose those crossword puzzle, spot the differences etc.
Hi Village Girl,
If she does not like reading, how about starting her off with illustrated books?
These books do not have many words and some of these books have
interesting stories and beautiful pictures to captivate a child.
Here are some recommended ones:
1) The Black Book of Colors by Menena Cottin
This book allows readers who are not blind to experience colors
the way a blind person might. The text, in both print and braille,
presents colors through touch (yellow is as soft as a baby chick's
feathers, smell (green is like the smell of freshly cut grass)
It is a very interesting and innovative book.
From this book, perhaps you could introduce her to read about
famous blind people like Helen Keller on the
internet.
2) The Boy who was raised by Librarians by Carla Morris
This story is about a boy who loves to go to the library and there are 3
librarians who are always there to help him with his questions, they help
him win a spelling bee, they share his interests and he is kind of adopted
by them. In the end, he himself becomes a librarian and one day meets
another little boy who comes to the library with questions. It is a
heart-warming tale written by a librarian herself.
(You can get her interested in books and libraries after this book)
There are other books on libraries:
- Goldie Socks and the Three Libearians by Jackie Mims Hopkins
- The Shelf Elf by Jackie Mims Hopkins
3) Books by Shel Silverstein
He has many books on poems that are interesting and funny.
For example, he wrote this poem about a girl called Pamela Purse
who always wants to be first, everytime in a queue, she would shout
\"Ladies First!\" Later on, her friends and her are captured by some
cannibals and the cannibals are deciding who to eat first and she shouts
\"Ladies First!\" - From 'The Light in the Attic'
He also has written 'The Giving Tree' a story of how a tree
gives its all to a boy who takes it for granted. Sad but thought-provoking
story that can be used to teach children on the value of being grateful.
Where to get them:
- You can get Shel Silverstein books from most bookstores.
- The other books should be found in the libraries, if not, you can order
them online from Amazon or any other online bookstore.

Yes, we sell books and when you buy a book, you will get the phrases
that have been extracted from that particular book for free.
Some parents just buy the phrases from the different books as
some of them have already bought the books from elsewhere.
However, if you buy the books from us, the phrases are free.
Each book comes with a collection of phrases from that book.
You can go to our facebook account -The Alternative Story-

Hi sleepy,
Would you recommend Friedrich? This book is in GEP reading list.
Yes it is a great book to read, it talks about 2 neighbours growing up
together, one poor and another rich. When Hitler begins to turn the
nation of Germany against the Jews, the poor German neighbour
gets richer by joining the Nazi party and the rich Jewish boy gets thrown
out of his house and their whole lives change.
However, it seems more suitable for primary 4 kids and above. But if your
child can understand it and enjoys it, then it should be no problem.
