Pls allow me to give my view:

- reason is more important than answer. If answer is correct but wrong/no reason, could be a lucky guess. If answer is wrong ( not what the teacher expect) but reason is correct, the child made a new discovery (and deserve additional bonus point)

- blue answer: reason given is “gave victory speech”. It implies anyone who manage to get themselves onstage and proceed to give victory speech will win the election. That reason, is not reasonable.
- green answer: reason given “won position of head prefect”. That is quite a indisputable reason.

I think it is out of necessity that it was marked that way.

The school teachers are indeed marking this way, whether to scare the kids into complying with this formula or not, I do not know. Neither do I want to risk finding out upon receiving his PSLE score. If I didnt care whether he ends up in a worse stream, I wouldnt harp on him complying with this pedantic rubbish.

Totally agree with you, and yes, I also told my daughters to comply, just in case! Unfortunately, one was able to, and the other not very well. Can't really do much about that. Looking on the more positive side, having them learn early on that compliance can bring rewards can be a good thing too (I know this is debatable).

He is the sort to always question why the true need for this law & that law, this rule & that rule, can’t we have a better system, etc. I know it is simpler to say “because I say so!” Or “because that’s the way it is.” Which is pretty sad. For non-negotiable items like school rules & societal rules, of course I insist. For less important stuff, well…on principle I find it hard to explain compliance for compliance’s sake. Mankind did not progress by accepting status quo, nor do real scientific inventions & breakthroughs come from repeating the proven techniques.

Valarie was the “answer”. “Give a speech” was the “observable data”. And need a reason why what is observed is the reason for the answer?

I understand. But kids at this age can start to learn that compliance for compliance's sake is just practical - you can't change the rules, so you just choose your battles. I don't expect my kids to comply with everything, especially when it's something we don't agree with, but there is a time for sticking your neck out, and a time for just doing what gets the result you want. A life lesson. [You should have heard us on the subject of English compos...]
