I think you are right about the principal. But I was sure that there were speak-only-Chinese days under that principal, but I don't know how they crafted them. Maybe it was just for assemblies, to impress the uninitiated like me

The Panorama Condo which is opposite the school is an ideal location. Less than 1km. There are many girls from SN living there. Good strategy by the parents who shifted house! 👏🏻

1. Macro level birth rates have very little correlation with number of applicants for any particular school in any particular phase.

2. Number of Phase 2A1+2A2 applicants to SNGS has been (remarkably) consistent but on an upward trend since 2017.

3. The hype about 2A need to ballot is NOT overhyped, especially with the revised policy, ie 20 extra seats to be given to Phase 2C. If that extra 20 seats (60 in total) were taken away after Phase 1 in past years, there will be balloting for Phase 2A1+2A2 in every year except for 2009. Fear mongering? Afraid not.

4. Phase 1 determines the likelihood of Phase 2A balloting (ie number of places remaining) BUT the house distance determines the probability of surviving that ballot. >2km would probably get a chance at balloting but if someone has the means to move within 2km and increasing that odds to 100%, why not? Hardly ridiculous and hardly drastic if that’s the school I think best fit my kid.

P/S:: if I’m applying to SNGS and currently <2km, I would definitely prefer everyone stays put

Oh. I was at their assembly once, heard them conducting the session in Chinese, and heard about the \"speak only chinese\" days then. I was suitably impressed by the fluidity of the speakers Maybe it was only a temporary feature or maybe it was specific to the principal then (she had left since, after like 4 years). Actually there is a English and Chinese week system in SNG currently.

Students are \"supposed\" to bring a storybook of the corresponding week for (silent) reading during their free time before class starts and
morning announcements are made in the language of the corresponding week.

Most official correspondence and briefings to parents are done in English unless your form teacher happens to be a Chinese Langauge teacher.

Personal experience (YMMV) is that the form-teacher conducts her parent-teacher briefings (that was pre-Covid Era) in Mandarin even if there were non Chinese speaking parents around.

The Co-form will then take over the remainder of the briefing for other matters in English.

It could be because of covid that entry is restricted to students and staff, and hence not taking in PV at the moment, but I would recommend you to call the school to check. Even for existing Parents Support Group members, the numbers to help out in each event is strictly controlled.

TBH, I think it makes sense to stop the PV scheme even post-COVID for SNGS. Given that SNGS is likely to have only 20 places for Phase 2B, it's impossible to fully satisfied GRL, Catholics and PV.

it become very hard to get back into St Nick, even though u are in an earlier phase 2A. Ever since MOE eliminated Phase 2A1, by merging it together with 2A2, become just a single phase 2A -

Pointless, to do anymore Parent Volunteer. Pretty guessed that there are a number of Catholics (SCs) staying less than 1 km from St Nick, out there around the vicinity, be they on rental basis or is their own permanent housing. Their number alone can easily wipe out the maximum number of PVs, dont even need to mention the number of GRLs present, also competing inside phase 2B. Hence, do away with PV, who joined with the objective (motive) : target in mind, for the sole purpose of P1 registration !
