depend on what school u applying DSA for and the domain u applying for. If is SOTA, Yes, recommended letter will do u good.
Hi, can I check along with the online dsa application submission, do we need or preferred to add testimonials from teachers? for example, media Club domain and getting a written testimonial from the cca teacher? Thanks for sharing.
But,
if is MOE controlled schools like NUS High or SST that type,
they themselves already set their own criteria what they test students for, that's why they purposely administered ( Round 1, Round 2 ) selection tests. So, even if u give them these letters, also useless, because is the test results that will determine they get (CO / WL or nothing)
And Yes,
indeed there have been P6 students in the past, that applied DSA for
- SOTA
- SST
- NUS High
- Sports school.
So,
just be mentally prepared that during Round 2 tests cum interview, going in groups of 4, one by one, if the Teacher were to ask u this qn, \"which other schools, did u also apply DSA for ? \"
Then, your child must be prepared to answer Tr on the spot, \" what if given a slot, which one is his preference ? \"
Eg.
- given slots (successful) for both (SOTA and SST / NUS High) DSA
Or
- given slots (successful) for both (Sports school and SST / NUS High) DSA
Or
- given slots (successful) for both (SST & NUS High) DSA
=============================
Why would the Teacher ask this type of strange question, during Round 2 ( Performance Task cum open Interview ) session ?
Because
the curriculum for ( SOTA and Singapore Sports School)
are vastly different,
from that of (SST GCE \"O\" level track and NUS High Integrated program curriculum ) -

If the teacher is willing to spend the time writing the testimonial, fantastic. But there is no way to upload attachments inside the MOE DSA portal. So you may be wasting the effort & time.

To add on

to what zac mom has written above, usually primary school Teachers won't write testimonial, unless the student happen to be the Teacher's favorite \"pet\" in class.
If the Teacher doesn't know the student in class well, chances are ... they won't write. -

I see.. so has anyone tried asking from the teachers yet?

If there is no attachment for such documents, how about at the interview stage, would it be helpful or needed at that point? -

Your first question:
I see.. so has anyone tried asking from the teachers yet?
If there is no attachment for such documents, how about at the interview stage, would it be helpful or needed at that point?
\" has anyone tried asking from the teachers yet ?\"
Firstly, note that
Primary school Teachers are NOT obliged to write testimonial letters, for their P6 students.
Secondly,
If a primary school Tr is willing to write for a student,
a) usually, this student is often the Teacher's \"pet\" in class.
b) the relationship bonding between Tr and student is already there, and Tr know the student pretty well, well enough to be willing to write a letter for pupil.
Your second question -
Depend on what kind of interview it is.
If is solo one to one type of interview Face-to-face, no one else inside the interview room except your son or daughter, and if u think the recommended letter can help him or her in that domain applied for, then Yes, your kid can bring the letter along and show it to the interviewer, when there is a chance to.
However, if is not a 1 to 1 solo interview, but a group interview type
eg.
RGS conducted group interview for 2019 DSA Maths domain applicants, then no need.
Because
RGS will make decision (CO / WL / unsuccessful), based on how the applicant handled group interaction session discussion.
==========================
Note
The recommendation letter, if u managed to successfully get one written for your kid, is good only in the beginning, initial stage. That is, opening the door to take some criteria entrance tests or to attend an interview. That's all.
However,
once the applicant has arrived at the final interview stage, then these recommendation letter no more effect, because the outcome of the interview -
whether \" make it \" or \"break it\",
everything will depend on how your child handled the interview conversation on that very day itself, be it a F2F interview or a group setting interview.
Why ?
Because
during the group setting interview, if the candidate did something wrong during the interview, no matter how impressive the content of the Recommendation letter was, in the end is still a Rejection outcome. -

I have not tried. I believe if really need, child should be the one asking the teacher directly, rather than me.

At the moment, I’d be happy to just rely on the Comments section typed by the form teacher into the report book after the SA1 exam. I think this is the important text that goes directly into the MOE portal, along with the school achievements.
If yours is the CCA teacher rather than form teacher, then maybe u do need to ask separately.
I highly doubt a testimonial letter will help at the interview stage. If it helps at all, it would be at the early screening stage (not the interview stage). During interview, all the focus would be on how the child himself can present & convey his personality/sincerity to the panel, not a piece of paper from a teacher, no matter how impressive.
And if the interview format is going to be over Zoom (we still dunno yet), how to show a piece of paper to the camera & let them read quickly? Very awkward. -

It would be helpful if you indicated what domain your child will be applying under.

Different domains different requirements.
If academic domain, don't bother about testimonials from teachers.
If Sports Domains, it depends very much on whether your child's teacher-in-charge or coach already speaking to the coaches/teacher-in-charge of the secondary school your child applying for. Usually, the coaches do talk to one another. However, if you are not sure, then it will be important to get some form of testimonial from either the teacher-in-charge or the coach. You will not be able to submit the testimonials via the portal. You have to separately submit via email. You will need to call the school separately to get the email.
As you can see different domains different requirements. So if you want advice, best to give more info, such as at least what domain your child applying for. -
I think the testimonials are largely not needed. One, as mentioned there is no place to upload them on the DSA portal. Two, one school even mentioned (last year) that you don’t need and they will reach out to the relevant teacher, coach, etc if they have questions. Seems like they realized 12,000+ students asking for testimonials was just an additional burden on primary teachers/coaches.
Could a testimonial be helpful for a certain kid in a certain domain? Probably. If obtained and sent, will it even be read by the shortlisting committee? Not sure… -
Hi there,
I am planning to apply to SOTA under Literary Arts for my 2nd son- there is a need for a personal statement as one of the requirements. Can I ask if any one can share any tips on how to help the child? any templates available?
Any experienced parents here? Especially under Literary arts?
TYSM!
