It should be well noted that dsa maths domain for top IP schools are v v competitive even though it may appear that there are more places assigned so bagging some platinum MO awards should be more secure. Just take a count of how many pupils get the platinum awards annually and roughly can tell the competition level for this domain.
      Competition is more strife,
amongst so many more DSA Maths applicants, compared to DSA Science applicants, because many parents send their P5/P6 kids out for Maths training, outside school hours.

On the other hand, DSA (English) domain also not easy. Each year, give around 5 CO (English) for RGS ?

NYGH got English domain, or only Bilingual domain, since is a SAP school ?
NYGH Bilingual domain, usually offer how many COs ? More than 10 COs ?

I kind of agree that if there’s only 1 dream sch, then go all out to secure that dsa spot. No point putting other schools to fill out the 3 vacancies only to agonise when dsa offer is obtained from the non-dream sch.

And after received COs from \"half-hearted\" DSA schools, come here to this forum and tell us in dilemma : don't know whether to accept or not to accept these DSA COs (from half-hearted schools)

Will attend the “half-hearted school” open house first before deciding whether to apply.

Actually, if the DSA schools offered u Academic COs

              and

if there is no commitment at all for Maths / Science contests,
              then
it makes no difference if u were to join later by PSLE Non-DSA path AL score and join their Talent programme (in Maths & Science), except perhaps ...

Allocation of Sec 1 classes, by unique, specific domain ?

              Do they practise this ?
              That means,

              - put all those DSA by English, go to one Sec 1 class (X),
& put a special English Tr to be their Form Tr.

              - put all these DSA by Maths, go to another Sec 1 class (Y),
& put a special Maths Tr there, to groom their Maths talent.

              - put all those DSA by Science, go to another Sec 1 class (Z),
& put a special Science Tr there, to groom their (Physics / Bio / Chem) talent.

              - put all those DSA by MEP, go to another Sec 1 class (M),
& put a special Music trained Tr there, to be their Form Tr.

              - put all those DSA by Art, go to another Sec 1 class (A), & put a special Arts trained Tr there, to be their Form Tr.

              - put all those DSA by Sports ball games (include volleyball, netball, basketball, softball, ping pong ball, tennis ball, etc), go to another Sec 1 class (B)

If one can be sure that his strongest subject can give him a CO, there is really no need to apply more than one domain. But given all

academic DSA are so competitive, and one cannot know whether they will flung their selection test or interview or not, safer to apply using a few domains.

You can apply 1 sport / performing art, and 1 academic to the same school, that should be fine. My suggestion would be NOT to use 2 academic DSA to the same school, because there's really no point to it. Just pick your strongest suit and go with it.

Don't try to 'strategise' because you think there's less people applying to, say, a language talent area. There is no 'quota' per academic talent area (except for the sport and performing art) and schools generally want the 'best'. It just happens that, most of the time, there are more math and science talent than language (it's a Singapore thing).

The allure of the academic domain is that it comes with no strings attached while you will need to commit to the related CCA for sport / performing art.

Not merely attend the open house. But, also

                  1) consider which track suits your child the best (IB / IP-A level / O level) track ?

                  2) consider distance travelling daily, from house to school.

                  If say,
one stay in Sengkang or Punggol or Woodlands, ask your kid to do a trial run first :-
try travelling for a week (Mon to Fri) everyday to NUS High, see if the kid can tahan or not, just for one week.

If can't tahan one week, forget about NUS High DSA, unless parents willing to shift house nearer to school.

Do not put the cart before the horse. Don't after successful for NUS High DSA, come to this forum and tell us
\"aiyoh, so far, got to travel so far everyday to NUS High : how huh ? should I accept the NUSH CO, or not ? \"

If the \"half-hearted\" school is nearby and is a Specialized domain school, can still consider and go for DSA.

Need to check what is in the student's report book / HDP. Different schools add differing amount of things. Sometimes even same school competition A is there, competition B is not. Good luck!

Some academic domains require you to do X for elective module/enrichment, which means you cannot do Y. Some of this stuff could flow through to Sec 3 classes as well (I think).

Definitely not as time consuming as going to practice 3-4x per week for 4 years, and one will still be taking the same core 8 classes. But may not always be free entry ticket, so need to check with specific schools on what they require/expect (regarding academic domain).
