From the perspective of preparing the student for A Level:

Short answer: none.

Long answer: there’s no advantage in taking O Level econs even if you plan to take A Level econs in JC. Unlike pure Physics, Chem or Bio, or A Math, where the ‘connection’ is obvious, in econs, the scope of the https://www.seab.gov.sg/docs/default-source/national-examinations/syllabus/olevel/2022syllabus/2286_y22_sy.pdf is limited (probably less than a quarter of A). Hence, you aren’t going to get much advantage out of it.

Furthermore, as Yuppidiyupp, the techniques (and approaches) to answering questions are different. If you are too ‘stuck’ in the O level style, it is even going to be detrimental to you (as a student) in JC / A Level.

Last but not least, it is not a humanities subject under L1R5, only as your ‘other’ subjects (which you could probably pick another easier subject to score or less effort to study). However, you have to give up a humanities subject slot to take up this subject. In terms of opportunity cost (no pun intended), it’s not worth it.

Humanities is a compulsory subject to be included in L1R5. Economics is not a replacement for one of the above. It’s subject type ‘others’. You can refer to https://www.moe.gov.sg/-/media/files/post-secondary/2022-jae-information-booklet.pdf%20 for more info.

Economics is more like another option if you don’t like D&T, FNA, Accounting, PE, etc. For the purpose of scoring, I will honestly pick one of them over economics. There’s a reason why few schools want to offer economics, even in schools where the majority of students end up in JC

As a public advice, there are many reasons to promote and pick TKGS, Economics (as a subject) is not one of them.

I think I may have made a mistake about giving up a humanities subject for Economics. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Notwithstanding, the argument for picking an “easier” subject as your R5 and R6 is still valid.

Cant say is a breeze.
A level Econs is different from O level Econs in terms of answering techniques.
Fresh JC Econs kids wont loose out to those who had taken in O.

On a side note, its not easy to score well for O level Econs.
Tkgs std is not what it used to be 10 yrs ago.
Its 2021 O level results not fantastic.

yep i agree that our standard has definitely dropped. mean l1r5 last year 13.8???? :yikes:

but if i recall correctly, the econs results for previous years o’s are as follows:
2021: 29 a1, 1 b3
2020: 29 a1, 2 a2

at prelims last year there was a d7, an e8, and a f9. the e8 and f9 ended up with a1s, so i think econs is basically a free distinction since such improvements are possible within just two months.

After looking at the past years' O-level (Econs) National exam questions, my conclusion drawn is -

It is much easier,

to score an A1 for
O-level (Economics),

than to get an A1 for

O-level (Literature or Geography or History)
