Choosing and Evaluating Primary Schools
-
Hi, we are a PR family. I am quite confused about how to choose a school for my child, which has a chance for PRs to get in in Phase 2C. We live in a rented apartment, so I am not tied to any location yet. So just want views on which schools are good enough and has chances of getting in for PRs, so that I can plan my lease renewal next year accordingly. Currently I live in Newton but understand that the schools within 1KM (ACS, SJI) from our current place go to citizens.

1. Child - M / F ?
2. What is 'good enough'?
3. What exactly are you looking for? Affiliation? Location? Single / mixed gender?
Different people have different priorities. You probably can't have the best of everything but there are certainly 'good enough' schools out there for SC and PR. Just a matter of meeting your priorities and needs / wants. -
Farrer Park Primary School is not too far and your child will have no issue securing a place in phase 2C as a PR.
Of course you have more options if you move but just saying this is a pretty good option for PRs and works for you even if you don’t move or if your next rental isn’t too far away. It’s a catchment school for Singapore children who failed to secure a spot at the more popular schools nearby that you mentioned and is quite a popular choice for PR and foreign students.Sonshine123\" post_id=\"2073396\" time=\"1657082639\" user_id=\"198583:

1)Child - M.
2)By good enough I mean good PSLE results maybe or maybe popular school. I am also not sure, cos I know that every school is a good school teaching the same syllabus.
3)I am ok with boys school or mixed gender. Location as I mentioned can be flexible except maybe not very north of SG like woodlands and neither too west like Jurong. Ok with the east like Bedok, Pasir Ris. -

Phase 2c for \"good\" schools are typically snapped up by SC<1km via balloting. If I were a PR, I may consider St Gabriel if stay <1km.

St. Stephen may be worth a look as well. If I stick to the 'look east' approach, I will keep an eye on Ngee Ann at the same time. I'll probably position myself within < 1km from Ngee Ann, and if the school is available for PR < 1km, I'll go for it. Else, I'll go for St. Stephen. However, if I prefer single gender schools, I'll stick to St. Stephen. -

Thank you for suggesting St. Gabriel. I will look into it. Looking for recommendations for schools, as I am not much aware of the local schools here. Hoping to gain some insights from here!

For co-ed schools, I will add De La Salle and Geylang methodist.

As you need to use your current address for registration, on take up for St Gabriel this year is comparable to last year so far, it may be quite close to full capacity at 2C and since you are >2km away, there is some risk.
Geylang methodist take up so far is 16 more than last year 103 vs 87, so look likely to be full capacity at 2C and seems to be >2km from your location as well.
De La Salle and St Stephen will have lower risk of gg to ballot in 2C.
All the above schools have some form of affiliation to secondary school.
Whether to choose a co-ed or boy's schools also depends if he has a younger sister or brother. -
Hi, I would like to have some advise on the primary school selection. I have 3 kids (2girls1boy) born in year 2016,2018&2021. Staying in Punggol.
We are a catholic family so i would be able to register a catholic school under phase 2b. Planing to try to register holy innocent primary school. Or should I try for st nicholas girls ?
Or should I just register in phase 2c for school within 1km near our home. Punggol green & valour primary…
I couldn’t find much review on the schools so I couldn’t decide should I go for phase 2b since is quite a distance from my house I will need to engage school bus service…
So I would like to hear your advise on school review if any or in this case how would you choose.
Thank you -
Hi Sillyjc,
For St Nick (Phase 2B), balloting arise for Catholic (SCs) who are staying less than 1 km. Unfortunately, as u stay beyond 2 km, no chance to even ballot.
If your eldest K2 girl prefer "All Girls" school , can consider at Phase 2B
CHIJ (OLGC or OLN)
OLGC : Our Lady of Good Counsel
OLN : Our Lady of Nativity
At Phase 2B,
u should have no problem, enrolling your eldest daughter into either school.
Both these two "All Girls" schools, are in turn affliated to their CHIJ St Joseph Convent (Secondary). Thus, an affliated Secondary school, is awaiting them. At PSLE next time, your girls themselves can also consider St Nick, RGS or any other schools, in future.
For your son,
when the time is due for him to enrol for P1 closer the time, u can consider Holy Innocent primary (SAP). If your eldest K2 daughter don’t mind co-ed school, can also consider this SAP school.
