Not sure what happened .. thought I sent it out but turns out nothing. OK anyway I was looking for model compo of past year PSLE Chinese questions and did not find any, until recently I asked in KSP PSLE Chinese thread and a friendly fellow KSP told me there is one book now in Popular by EduVision (cover page purple in color). It turns out a very good book. My DD's Chinese tutor said all pieces are well written and 很有针对性! Much better than the normal compo books you usually get from bookstores. Got all 4 types of compo for both Normal Chinese and Higher Chinese. You hardly get a book with so many model compos all from past year papers! Just sharing in case you are also looking for good Chinese model compos, as I got this piece of useful info from KSP too. Cheers :rahrah:

Yes, fully agree with u, Mr Bin 🙂

I wish they have also written one each, for O level (pu-hua and gao-hua) zuowen, Chinese composition too.

Hi parents, with the prelims coming up soon, I’d like to perhaps steel myself mentally for any tough papers/big drop in results.

During the mid-year PTM, DS’ form teacher said that schools “no longer” set killer prelim papers.

Can I check how true this is? Did your kids’ teachers say likewise? Did the more recent (for example) 2020 and 2021 prelims seems easier compared to previous years? I have not gotten round to looking at/analyzing various schools’ prelim papers yet.

My DS’s form teacher said, now with Covid, they try not to set too hard papers and try to align to PSLE standard, knowing that if anything happens, they will fall back on the Prelim results. That’s for his school, which is a neighborhood school.

This makes sense. But I also wonder how the schools would treat students who catch COVID during the PSLE. With the current relaxation of measures, would they cater for a specialized quarantine area within the school or have the students take the exam at the NCID instead? It would seem impractical to continue to have to rely on prelims when the government has removed/relaxed their approach elsewhere.

It being a transmissible “disease”, I cant imagine what the medical protocol would be: ask the invigilators to wear full PPE before handing out/collecting the papers? And then sterilize the papers (how?) before transporting them to SEAB? It would be very difficult to administer.

While there have been past cases of kids taking the PSLE while hospitalised in normal wards, I dont think any of them were as contagious as Covid.

A friend’s son had to miss 4 written papers this recent SA1 (MYE). Report book indicated “ungraded”. School did not make arrangements for him to take in another room or make up once recovered.

Last year SEAB/MOE released more info on the "special considerations" and how they award a PSLE score if a student cannot sit for the actual paper(s). On first order, I don’t think a school setting a hard or easy paper will impact things. However, if the derived score is not consistent with prior results they will analyze further. In this sense, the non-killer prelims may be better.

I think we need to see what the policy is for taking the exam this year. Last year they relaxed some of the conditions (at least vs. 2020). I don’t known for sure but I believe this may have been done because the special considerations is meant for a kid or two missing the actual papers. The methodology didn’t really work if the entire school cohort was on LOA/QO (last year). Of course later in 2021 we were also getting used to living with COVID.

I’d have to look up the rules again, but I think in both 2020 and 2021 if you had COVID you could not sit for the papers.

I agree that in the last 2 years, students who were infected with COVID were not allowed to sit for the PSLE. I’m just curious whether the same approach will apply this year given how the government has relaxed so many of its rules elsewhere. We can even be maskless in our offices (provided we are not interacting physically with others or in a customer-facing location, so I’m reminded constantly). So, I’m interested to see if this has any impact on schools.

As a side-note, I see that some schools have started to resume physical assembly even though our case counts are spiking again.

Well, around half my son’s class has already caught it once during this recent wave, either during June hols or now…the “good” thing is exams have yet to commence. I’d try to avoid it during exam season. Also unknown if they can actually catch it again. Load them up with Vit C and Sambucol and whatever you have…
