It seems like wait and see doesn't really add more clarity to the situation? If instead, everyone put in on Day 1 for their first choice, you could at least see if applicants > vacancy. If so and by how much, maybe some further out distance people decide to drop out. Yes, still won't know how many decide to drop out but it seems like people would have more info than everyone holding back until the last day.

Maybe it's always this way? Just wondering about what would actually help people make a decision.

Since last year, this idea that numbers will move greatly on the last day of each phase has been debunked. People have already made their minds actually. Small changes with the reported numbers gets dramaticised. Moving online and removing in person applications have greatly eased the drama. For those having to hope and on the margins of balloting, you have also made up your mind.

Actually I don’t think most of it is due to parents adopting “wait and see”, there isn’t much alternative at phase 2A for most people anyway it’s try and if fail try again at 2B and / or 2C.

I think a possible explanation for the differences in number could be due to difference in how a school treats an application as duly received.

Some schools report the number of all applications first before verifying / asking for supporting documents (it’s an interim number anyway if there’s any applications rejected later on for lack of supporting documents or mismatch of information it will be adjusted downwards).

Other schools may adopt a more cautious approach and only report the number of applications for which they have received and verified supporting documents to be proper. They don’t deem online applications to be duly completed until they have verified everything.

The school that I have applied for emailed for supporting documents only in the afternoon. Some parents might have not prepared everything before hand (or not prepared well enough for example my school asked for all documents to be combined together in single pdf and it took me a while to get this done and i think there are some who could take longer for being even less tech savvy than me. Some may have submitted but might have some issues and the school have asked them to rectify / include more complete documentation.

This is a reasonable explanation. Putting some perspective to the day 1 of phase 2A number, it probably make up of around 40% of the eventual total 2A applications. Around 50 schools are currently 20-50 applicants below last year numbers and 22 schools are currently 51-99 applicants less than last year's numbers and 3 schools have difference of more than 100. It's still a long way to go.

Well, that would make sense to me. Like I said, < 1 km or 1-2 km I'm not really sure there's a decision to be made. Even > 2 km I'd think many are willing to try their luck whether it turns out being 50:50 odds or a bunch of people for a few spots.

Subsequent replies from others gave an explanation as to why some numbers are so low. I didn't know this but it seems to make sense. Regardless, my comment or question was only trying to ask whether people would actually be better off if everyone went in early (since some day 1 figure were so low)? If you are the only one that waits maybe you get more info but if everyone waits I don't see how this helps at all. I guess we'll probably get a clearer picture tonight (no need to wait for day 3, might as well make a move and/or more applications are put in the tally).

The update by today (11pm) should be a fairly accurate representation of the number of applicants in Phase 2A. Several popular schools are waaaaay under their historical values and I think parents shouldn't get too excited if they are eyeing these schools.

For my personal interest in Phase 2A:
Greendale Primary School: 95 vacancies in Phase 2A / 12 applicants (so far)
Horizon Primary School: 79 / 78
Northshore Primary School: 147 / 9
Oasis Primary School: 54 / 20
Punggol Cove Primary School: 91 / 34
Punggol Green Primary School: 68 / 77
Punggol View Primary School: 65 / 57
Valour Primary School: 115 / 52
Waterway Primary School: 100 / 63

The numbers seem to be an abnormally low for some MK schools (e.g. Northshore, Oasis) but I suspect all the numbers will still move upwards by this evening.

The current registration numbers should be causing some level of discomfort (if it hasn't sinked in yet) for parents in Punggol whose children are NOT in MK (and there are quite a lot of children in other private childcare facilities), especially if they are eyeing schools < 1km. A number of them will definitely require balloting. For PRs in Punggol, the best thing to do now would be to plan for options that do not need balloting in Phase 2C cos the Phase 2CS situation is likely to be devastating.

Yes, but I won’t count on them staying the same by the end of tomorrow :evil:

Based on the latest, some schools have made big gains overnight If things stay the same, and those big names numbers come in tomorrow, we may have a record number of schools balloting so early in the registration exercise.

Another 2k+ were added today. 16 schools are oversubscribed so far:

Another 10 schools are currently with less than 10 spots left. Of those 10, Wellington caught my eye as it could be a MK effect, up from 48 to 74 so far in 2A. SCGS and Admiralty are also not in the shortlist of 35.

When I compared this year's applicants so far vs last year's applicants in 2A, around 10 schools have >40 lesser applicants so far with Rulang recording only 39 vs last year's 132. Hopefully it's not a case of 2A2 folks not knowing they can apply under the merged 2A phase

Given that phase 2 becoming more competitive due to the 1/3 rule, I think more people would apply under 2A if they are eligible. Reckon we still have another approximately 2k applicants to go.

The one week wait till 14 July may not be so pleasant for some.

Many parents would go through the inconvenience and expensive action of moving nearer to their desired schools, and these parents bona fide earn the right to use a new address for registration. However, what would be sad for some of P2A parents is to lose out to some of the “fake” P2C applicants, like:


1. renting an a room in house/condo and leaving it empty to just get the address
2. Buy a property nearby, rent it out (or leave it empty) and continue to use the address for registration’s sake
3. Using “caregiver” address but the caregiver is not really a real caregiver (common for 1-2km)
4. ‘Renting’ from a friend/relative to just use the address and not staying there.
(What other “keng” situations do you know?)

It’s another reality of the social economic divide for the Primary One registration.
