MOE says 15 marks of the Mathematics PSLE paper are challenging. So average students can only hope to score 85% max?

No wonder why there are now so many tuition providers offering math enrichment to target the \"GEP & Math Olympiad style\" questions appearing in the PSLE. If the kids don't receive this special training, they can kiss their AL1 and AL2 goodbye?


I myself am also looking for assessment books to tackle complex PSLE mathematics problems.

My Primary 4 daughter is identified as a High Achiever Learner and has been selected to do the E2K Math in school.

Passed GEP round 1 but was not selected into the GEP in Primary 3.

Overall Math and Science scores are above 95% and she tells me that the Math & Science school work doesn't pose a challenge to her.

What is a good PSLE math enrichment to stretch my child's potential? Preferably one that can teach the core school syllabus well, and also some GEP & Math Olympiad concepts to prepare for 'stretch' questions that are appearing increasingly often in the PSLE.

I have shortlisted 3 options. Please share any feedback. Tks. 🙏

Been asking around in the parent chatgroups. General consensus is that since last year's PSLE mathematics paper was challenging, it means that this year's paper will be easier?

I beg to differ. High abilities do not need Math Olympaid or GEP to score AL2 and AL1. You just need the right assessment books to help you learn and practise.

The other way to look at it is that I only need to be able to do 1 out of 3 \"hard\" questions to hit 90 and get AL1.

Of course, this assumes no other mistakes along the way. But AL has changed the math paper \"calculus\" for kids that are good at Math but not Michael Phelps Olympiad type.

I wish to boost my kid's problem solving ability and confidence for those 4-mark and 5-mark type of difficult PSLE maths questions.

I have already bought the https://www.ammielwan.com.sg/publications-1 from Ammiel wan math academy. The solutions are clear and give step by step instructions. My kid enjoys the challenge and requested for more similar practice.

MOE says that the Math PSLE is kept at a consistent standard of difficulty across the years. This standard is maintained by having a few challenging questions set each year, making up about 15 marks of the paper.

So does that mean average students can only score 85% max?

In other words, will the majority of the students take the exam knowing that unless they have external math olympiad training, they can only hope to achieve a max of AL3 (85%) for their Math PSLE?

My kid is truly average in Math ability. Not able to do out-of-the-box questions which are thrown in as differentiator qns. Of course when we watch the post-exam explanation videos he will grasp it after a while, but if seeing new ones for the first time during PSLE, definitely cannot solve within short time.

Hence I’ve resigned myself to expect max AL3 (84 marks, leeway for careless mistakes) for Math. 85 is AL2 by the way.

My girls don’t take MO or tuition or special classes. Last time their pri sch used MPAL maths workbook (basic), visible thinking and onsponge (HA class) for maths homework coupled with loads of sch based worksheets. I don’t recall having to buy outside assessment books. I myself bought Ammiel Wan Get me thinking books (UTM method) for self teaching only. So far so good, works for us.
