MOE says 15 marks of the Mathematics PSLE paper are challenging. So average students can only hope to score 85% max?

I beg to differ. High abilities do not need Math Olympaid or GEP to score AL2 and AL1. You just need the right assessment books to help you learn and practise.

The other way to look at it is that I only need to be able to do 1 out of 3 \"hard\" questions to hit 90 and get AL1.

Of course, this assumes no other mistakes along the way. But AL has changed the math paper \"calculus\" for kids that are good at Math but not Michael Phelps Olympiad type.

          Please share TIA 🤗 !

I wish to boost my kid's problem solving ability and confidence for those 4-mark and 5-mark type of difficult PSLE maths questions.

I have already bought the https://www.ammielwan.com.sg/publications-1 from Ammiel wan math academy. The solutions are clear and give step by step instructions. My kid enjoys the challenge and requested for more similar practice.

I am also trying to buy the http://www.nicklebeetutors.com/p/math-resources.html p5 & p6 notes. The picture is from @mummyof3angels who has already sold her copy. Can't find on Carousell too. I called Nicklebee tutors but they don't sell to non-students. If anyone has a copy for sale please let me know.

            https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/psle-difficulty-level-15-percent-challenging-yearly-2811321

MOE says that the Math PSLE is kept at a consistent standard of difficulty across the years. This standard is maintained by having a few challenging questions set each year, making up about 15 marks of the paper.

So does that mean average students can only score 85% max?

In other words, will the majority of the students take the exam knowing that unless they have external math olympiad training, they can only hope to achieve a max of AL3 (85%) for their Math PSLE?
My kid is truly average in Math ability. Not able to do out-of-the-box questions which are thrown in as differentiator qns. Of course when we watch the post-exam explanation videos he will grasp it after a while, but if seeing new ones for the first time during PSLE, definitely cannot solve within short time.

Hence I’ve resigned myself to expect max AL3 (84 marks, leeway for careless mistakes) for Math. 85 is AL2 by the way.

My girls don’t take MO or tuition or special classes. Last time their pri sch used MPAL maths workbook (basic), visible thinking and onsponge (HA class) for maths homework coupled with loads of sch based worksheets. I don’t recall having to buy outside assessment books. I myself bought Ammiel Wan Get me thinking books (UTM method) for self teaching only. So far so good, works for us.

Then it’s up to the child (or parents) -

How desperate you want your A1 lo.

Cannot be only 5 marks challenging, then whole village also A1 right?

Us parents are probably still stuck in the 1980s when it was super easy to score 100 for Math (I dont recall any differentiator qns back then).

Let go of the expectation that Math is easy to score in, just becos it is less subjective than Science OEQ or the languages.

It is not possible to rote drill those differentiator qns. If it can be done, whole cohort will score AL1.

But hor… looking at the current PSLE math paper, I still think it’s not difficult to score 100% leh. The differentiator questions are, and have always been, there.

The challenge, as always, is who can finish the paper first.

Obviously there is a wide range of math abilities within the cohort. IMO, the differentiator questions are not that hard but they are not simple either. i.e. all of the \"difficult\" problems can be solved by Non-GEP/Math DSA/Olympiad podium type kiddos if things go well. But unfortunately things don't always go so well 😄

It's all whether you can see it and the light blub turns on under the stress/timing of exam (PSLE in particular) conditions.

Regardless, there's no need to be perfect under the current format. May even be able to leave one or two questions blank and still be tied with the Platinum Medal winners on this 1/4 of PSLE...
