MOE says 15 marks of the Mathematics PSLE paper are challenging. So average students can only hope to score 85% max?

Those challenging qns will have about 2 or 3 parts? If the first part made easier then guess should be ok? Don’t know if 15% is at high side but 5% the feel is at the low side? Will end up with more balloting in Secondary sch placement or not? Then luck is more important then?

Even if they do not come with parts, children who attempt and can show one or two steps of working will still get method marks. So even though these questions make up 15% of total, it does not mean that the average will get zero out of the 15%. Just try after completing the easier questions.

          100 - 15 = 85 marks (AL2)

It’s still possible to achieve AL2 if the child cannot do 15 marks of challenging questions.

If the child deemed most of the questions tough, I would say that the child has a very weak Math foundation and should revise back his P3 to P5 Maths.

2021 Maths - Helen and Ivan question is not that challenging too. Wonder why the children cry.

Been asking around in the parent chatgroups. General consensus is that since last year's PSLE mathematics paper was challenging, it means that this year's paper will be easier?
I think the 2019 Maths PSLE questions were more challenging as it was based on full Math syllabus and I counted the number of marks worth of challenging questions. They were worth more than 15 marks! Go do the paper, parents.

Due to COVID-19, PSLE 2020 and 2021 were based on reduced syllabus so the kids should count their lucky stars.

Brace yourself for 2022 PSLE. No news of reduced syllabus means your children had better work harder to improve.

              fully agree.

Last 2 years' PSLE Maths (2020 & 2021), SEAB gave chance, because of lockdown. Kids born in year (2008, 2009) are lucky. This year, brace up for a challenging PSLE Maths

Fully disagree but that's neither here nor there and we can disagree.

Many kids can do the egg tart, triangle, and semi-circle problems just fine. But they couldn't do the Helen and Ivan question.

IMO, all of these problems (2017-2021) can be done by kids that are reasonably good at math (but not Olympiad type). Conversely, any of these problems can cause difficulties for the same kids under exam/PSLE conditions.

But the difficulty, or perceived difficulty, of the exam has little to do with full syllabus or remove a few topics that had very little weight anyways. You can always crank up the difficulty of whatever questions are asked, CLT or no CLT.

Either way, MOE has said its about the same. I tend to agree with their statement after going through papers with different kids.

In the end, it doesn't change how you prepare or what you do on test day. Just try to answer every question as well as you can.

I would think it is the earliest to score AL1 for maths out of the 4 subjects. So got to work hard for it.

For most Singaporean students, the hardest should be Chinese Language. AL2? AL3? Zuowen/compo and oral are a little bit of luck and marking is subjective

Those who aim to go IP, with an average of AL2 for all subjects, the chances of going to IP maybe slim. Last year, many who scored AL8, got balloted out of IP.

If the Maths paper is set intentionally so that only the more able students can get AL1, then perhaps parents need to give up the idea that any student who works hard enough can get AL1. Some kids just can't, and to set a clearly unattainable goal would be really hard on them.

My kid is truly average in Math ability. Not able to do out-of-the-box questions which are thrown in as differentiator qns. Of course when we watch the post-exam explanation videos he will grasp it after a while, but if seeing new ones for the first time during PSLE, definitely cannot solve within short time.

Hence I’ve resigned myself to expect max AL3 (84 marks, leeway for careless mistakes) for Math. 85 is AL2 by the way.[/quote]
Oh I think I got confused by the AL system. AL3 is from 85% to 89%. AL2 is from 80% to 84%.

Still, having 15 marks reserved for challenging and tough questions, means the max an average student can score is 85%, just lose 1 more mark and it's an AL3.

Looks like MOE is preparing parents for a challenging PSLE math exam this year. Luckily my kid only taking PSLE next year.
