PLMGS Primary was also not so ‘popular’ just a few years ago. A number of batches were balloting for SC > 2km and even for PR < 1km. In those years, SMPS were more popular than PLMGS.
Isn't SMPS similar to PLMGPS? Both affiliated to a high COP O level sec school. Just find it strange why one is oversubscribed but the other is undersubscribed. Maybe the catchment area is different?
Most of the demand had a lot to do with demographic changes and estate redevelopment. Hougang and Serangoon were massively revamped and redeveloped in recent years, leading to increase demand for school places.
As for not being affiliated to a top tier secondary school, I think SMSS can easily choose to be a top tier secondary school if the management wants to, given the school’s history and background. They only have to raise affiliation COP, remove NA and NT classes, and viola. Is that something the management would want? Probably not. I think they are happy with not being seen as a top tier school. -
I think they just happened to miss the boat in pushing for an IP track (if they wanted to. I dunno).
MOE not gonna allow removal of NA and NT.
In fact they have ordered Crescent Girls (and another school, can’t remember which) to add in NA and NT track, for diversity reasons. -

Tanjong Katong Girls School and Tanjong Katong Secondary School also adding streams beyond Express (think it is just the NA equivalent though).

I think the SAP O Level schools (4 co-ed + Maris Stella High) will be the only non-IP/non-IP-O dual schools remaining that are only Express. -

SMSS is an aided school unlike CGS, TKGS and TKSS. If they want to stop to offer NA and NT, MOE can’t stop them. It’s not part of the area regulated by MOE. Notwithstanding, it’s not that important since SBB will be implemented soon.

Paya lebar Methodist Girls Secondary (PLMGS) is more popular than St Margaret Girls Secondary (SMSS),
You are right to compare SMPS to PLMGS as the AL COP for both affiliated sec schools is the same at AL11.
Oversubscribed but maybe because PLMGS is surrounded by many HDB flats. I got a shock when checking out SMPS on the street directory, half of the map is occupied by the Istana compound.
because
PLMGS being affliated to Anglo Chinese Junior College (ACJC), is stronger in demand, more popular
than
SMSS being affliated to St Andrew Junior College (SAJC), based on L1R5 admission score comparison. -

Assuming that hypothesis is correct:
Paya lebar Methodist Girls Secondary (PLMGS) is more popular than St Margaret Girls Secondary (SMSS),
because
PLMGS being affliated to Anglo Chinese Junior College (ACJC), is stronger in demand, more popular
than
SMSS being affliated to St Andrew Junior College (SAJC), based on L1R5 admission score comparison.
It follows that GMSS must be more popular than SMSS, and GMPS must be more popular than SMPS.
Neither of which is true. -
Taking about affiliation, I always think that CHIJ Kellock is super unrated in Bukit Merah, even though it is the only school in Bukit Merah with affiliation. Why ballot it out at Radin Mas, Alexandra and River Valley Primary School, when you could almost always secure a place at CHIJ Kellock with affiliation?!

While, affiliation is good,

Some affiliation is more good than others.
If CHIJ Kellock is affiliated to CHIJ SNGS, I am sure it will be the most popular school in Bukit Merah. -
Also, on the topic of affiliation.
You can only get max 4 bonus points for your L1R5, and the best way to get it is:
1. 2 from CCA (A1 or A2)
2. 2 from HMT
The above combo will allow you to have 4 bonus points for ALL JC.
Hence, if bonus points for an affiliated JC is an important consideration, you need to get your priorities check.
