      Hi,

Just saw yr post. I m a J1 parent too at NY.
It came to me as a shock as well that the test and exam standards for NY are just so high.

I read some posts from another platform and checked with my friends. Seems like it's quite common to fail some subjects in JC1 (n esp in NY). They usually will pick up in J2 and I hope so. Positive encouragement is important to push them on. Cheers..
Ny std is getting better and higher.
Similar to top 2 JCs, its common to perform badly in Ny Internal exams.
But when comes to National A level, yr DC will do well or excel!
Thats why Ny is no. 3 JC based on academics.

Nanyang Junior College is occupied by several top O-level students now, coming in from various Secondary schools all over Singapore. Some of them, even though their L1R5 score do qualify them for (RI / Hwa Chong), but they still choose to flock to here (NYJC).

Definitely, many Nanyang students will desire to continue to excel in their final last lap A-level, before moving onto university, next.

Once again, NYJC did poorly in securing top tier defence scholarships this year.

          Out of 93 in total

          HCI - 19
          RI - 18
          EJC - 7
          ACSI - 6
          RVHS - 6
          VJC - 4
          DHS - 4
          ACJC - 4
          SJI - 2
          ASJC - 2
SOTA, NUSH, NJC, TJC, ASJC, TMJC, SAJC, NYJC - 1 each

          The rest went to polytechnics

Could it be not many from NYJC applied for it compared to other JCs?

Top tier defence scholarships used to attract huge number of applicants from top A-level / IB performers, commonly from RI, HCI, ACSI, other IPJCs, as well as the popular non-IPJC ACJC.

So \"every year\" not many NYJC students applied for it compared to other JCs?

These are raw numbers. A more accurate view is to look at the number of awardees in relation to the size of the cohort.

Also bearing in mind that not all awardees are from the recently 2021 graduated cohort.

For this year, EJC has 7 awardees (cohort size 650?), NYJC has 1 awardee (cohort size ? )

How about this one (for example)

                    Is it

                    because

those Govt board prefer to give scholarship places to IP students,
                    instead of to
                    (O-level graduates, who joined A-level JCs) ?

I'm not going to be drawn into the ejc vs nyjc debate. :siam:

Kudos to you for counting how many from each school.
Whether you look at the 2022, 2021 or 2020 figures, they probably don't differ very much.

But if you really want to differentiate, just look at the very top tiers, i.e. saf scholarships, psc engineering, medicine and dentistry.

Also, the defence scholarships are not the only scholarships around. Many other types, just that they don't publish the names of the scholarship recipients. Even PSC stopped publishing the names and schools.
But can confirm defence is one of important ones around lah. Their award ceremony is held at istana. Even psc ceremony is not held at istana.

FWIW, SAFOS is just one rung down from the President Scholarship. It’s importance is, thus, reflected in the location of the award ceremony.
