Although I am not an expert in Dementia, my own (limited) experience seems that the degeneration is across the board. And as a result, the innate personality seems to manifest itself stronger. The other observation is that worsening dementia also leads to degradation of other bodily functions.
We like to think there is innate personality but really it is which part of the brain dies first and how it progresses to the rest of the brain. Nothing linear here. -
After my father got stroke many years ago, maybe part of his brain has died during stroke, he became having poor memory, impatient, like to complain everything, suspect everyone surrounding him, …etc.
I agree some of these are his innate personality and I was angry and also argued with him. Then one day, DH said to me " As you know your father got stroke but not you. Why you need to be calculative and angry with him?" Therefore, whether it is from his innate personality or brain damaged during strike is not important. Since father has already fell ill, we just tried our best to forgive and tolerate him. -

Well said. It is the caregiver that needs to adapt to the person who is ill and not the other way around.

The actress who played the role of the mum won the Best Actress award in the 12th Beijing International Film a couple of days ago. Would be nice if we can catch it in local cinemas.
