That is what I thought. A child competent in the technical aspects would score 32-35/40, but to improve the Content portion (out of 20) I have also heard that the storyline needs to show a deep reflection or poignant aspect. In other words the writer needs to demonstrate a flair for the language & also to use the platform to convey deep thoughts, as opposed to a mundane “everyday” story.

I was aiming for that 38-40/40 type of story to stand out from the rest.

Deep reflection / poignant aspect is somewhat a test /assessment of maturity than language proficiency. Wont this further advantage girls who mature earlier? Lol

Sure. Arent they the ones who win the Queen’s
Commonwealth Essay comp year after year?

But who’s to say boys can’t have that introspective or maturity of thought. They may well exist, just rarer at this age that’s all.

Certainly. Just saying…at the aggregate level lor. At the individual level there will be boys who are very matured

The school should have gone through the structure of an expository essay with them and probably have gotten them to write at least one expository essay in school.

If by now he is still not familiar of what an expository essay is, my suggestion is to stick to the familiar narrative essay format.

I agree with swc. Stick to what your child has been practising for the PSLE. If you want content to stand out, learn to add twists to the story. But still must practise first before using in exam. Our favourite teacher used to remind kids each time before exam never to try something new in exam. Try during her writing assignments and she will guide. But in exam always only do the tried and tested way. She even said if kids always write 3 pages, don't suddenly add 5 pages in exam. One of our kids thought he felt very inspired and wrote 2 extra pages in SA2 and went out of point when he usually scored 35-38/40 during practice.

I agree with you Zac's mum. I think by P6, there are a lot of boys capable of discussing and forming their own views on these commonly tested topics. In fact, good teachers at P6 will do lots of discussion of this sort throughout the year, in a way to prepare for Oral and Compo. The issue is for kids to learn to weave these into their writing.
