Daddy with one son\" post_id=\"2085310\" time=\"1665371739\" user_id=\"102861:
Hi, will the boys who had a CO from HCI be attending any briefing by the school?
Some of these boys who have received joint COs
from
(Hwa Chong and ACSI),

may drop CO (HCI),
go over to IB (ACSI) instead,

since

This is reality, a fact -

It is easier to get more than 42 points readily,
than to

get 4As from SG-A-level.

The same,
apply to those who received joint COs
from (RGS / NYGH / MGS).
They can turn down CO ( RGS / NYGH), accept IB CO (MGS) instead.
The ball is thrown into your court now, those who received joint COs from

SG-A-level destination bound IP schools

Vs.

IB schools (ACSI / SJI / MGS).

Starting from Sec 1,
you have 6 long years ahead to run & manovere your runway, to choose from,

compared to O level JAE candidates, who have an extremely short 2 years runway, to move around.

I guess everyone who has a CO will accept?
Of course not everyone will accept.

It all depends, on yourself.
How hungry, or how much
do you really desire your CO ?
If not that keen,
u will tend to give up and end up, rely on your Psle AL score to enter schools.

But if you are very hungry,
then u can't wait to accept the CO.

Who will turn down the CO ?
Those who received more than one CO ?

But shouldn’t this uncertainty or not wanting to be tied down to a certain activity be part of the discussion before applying for that domain or that school?

Issues like distance, commitment, programs, or that one dream school only etc should have been researched and discussed before submitting the application, in my opinion, rather than after getting a CO. Then there won’t be this dilemma of whether to accept or reject the CO, and try their luck with PSLE because there’s a target school all along.

Rejections when offered O levels instead of IP, this sounds like a valid reason.
Agree. That's why I thought those who has a CO will accept based on what you said. They should have done their due diligence before that. Of course others pointed out the change of preference could be one of the reasons not to accept.

I am sure schools and MOE are monitoring the stats, especially since it changed to online application and max of 3 applications. I was looking at the info shared by KP1 and coast, number of applications for DSA has been increasing for the past 3 years. PSLE new scoring system, increasing awareness of DSA and more opportunities for students helped push up the numbers. We dont know the % of COs accepted. Can we assume 8 out of 10 will accept their COs? If the numbers are not high, isnt that a waste of time and resources?

There are parents or child who are willing to travel to get to dsa schools. I stay in one section of the island and my eldest dsa into 3 different Sch at three other extreme regions.
Yes but you made a conscious decision to apply to the school, knowing the distance. So I believe distance was already considered when applying, that’s the difference.

Increase in application could also be due to the ease of application, compared to the old manual way. Now one online form for all 3 schools. So I guess it’s natural to just want to fill up all 3 spots, the Asian way! 😂

Agreed. For my subsequent kids, I only apply one dsa school (to follow the eldest). There’s no faltering to second choiced school etc. It’s either to hit the jackpot or no (use PSLE then).

I think the ”issue” I have is applying for schools they do not have any intention to accept. But it’s free anyway, so just fill up the 3 spots. So that is just being selfish?

You don't get bonus points for not being selfish.
Besides, no one is breaking any rules. It is still working within the system.

I don't think it's fair to say that the student has no intention of accepting schools which he/she applied for. Rather, the chances of getting in may be slim so the student applies anyway. If there is no wish to enter that school then there is no reason to apply - I doubt students (or parents) do that.

For example, my DS submitted an application for RI and we all knew it was a long shot (which was proven true). By the same token, we would not submit an application for NJC as we wanted an all-boys school.

During my daughter time, someone applied to 7 schools just to hit the jackpot….. it can get so crazy….it’s the take first think later mentality or the “long shot” as some have mentioned.
