Thank u
I would follow the school's advice. ie if the school/teacher deem your child suitable to take Higher Chinese, just continue to take. -

All the best for your child too!
I think most schools will be having their last paper next week. -

Suggest you can further breakdown his overall AL4, 5 into the various components to understand his stronger and weaker parts.
Hi, my kid’s higher Chinese and normal Chinese results are about the same (around AL4 to AL5 level). I’m thinking if dropping higher Chinese in P6 will give him more time to concentrate on normal Chinese or taking higher Chinese will help improve his normal Chinese since our focus is still on normal Chinese cause it counts towards the total AL score. Anyone has any take or experience to share? Thank you.
For CL, if kid is talkative, can start preparing his oral, read out loud Chinese passages, text for oral or materials given by sch in p4, p5. Oral weightage is high in CL.
Not sure if this is true for every sch, but the teachers teaching hcl in school are usually the better teachers. If you alr know who they are, you will know if teachers style fit your ds learning. For eg, if teacher speaks more in class, allows kids to learn through listening, fit some kids. Teachers who keep doing practice papers and kids mark their own exercises, do not fit these same kids. This style fits top kids well, kids who are exam moulded, I believe but stands corrected.
Share about a boy I know.
CL was ard AL4, 5 in p5. Hcl was often borderline or fail. Got a hcl teacher in p6 who talked a lot in class, until her voice often sounded sore. She is bilingual and explained the meaning of Chinese phrases in English when students asked. Very engaging and students enjoyed Chinese lessons. Gave materials for oral which parents practised at home with boy from June.
Parents can tell hcl is too far fetched for the boy, told boy to study for CL, no need to stress over hcl. Boy told parents he felt liberated after dropping hcl mentally. Didnt drop hcl registration though, just go for lessons and focus on oral. but he liked the hcl teacher so much, he will not let her down, so continue hcl lessons. After psle Sci paper, he told parents, he would sprint for the finishing line for Hcl paper, for the sake of his hcl teacher.
He scored AL3 for CL in PSLE. Passed hcl! All without tuition. I think, not having the stress from hcl helped him in CL. He decided not to take hcl in sec sch although he qualified. Not sure if he fully understands the 2 bonus points implication. But we know this boy is not interested in Chinese.
I believe, CL unlike Eng, can be studied for exam. All within scope of textbook. Keep practising tingxie which this boy did with all his might. But to note, that boy is very vocal and opinionated. So we think oral really helped him, still the case in sec 1.
Good luck to your boy's PSLE journey. Don't forget to pause to re charge, enjoy the great bonding time with him along the way. Sec sch is a totally different ball game for child and parents. -

Thanks for sharing! He understands the focus is on CL but he wants to continue with HCL so hopefully his SA2 results will support it. Yes, we r relaxing after the last paper today!

I think you know right, for non-sap at the end of P4 school will recommend who can take HCL and there are parents who want their child to take HCL even though school didnt recommend them to take. But by the end of P5 school will hold the decision making who can continue to take HCL in P6. That is why my previous post just said let school decide. If they see your son's result is decent enough he can continue.
Thanks for sharing! He understands the focus is on CL but he wants to continue with HCL so hopefully his SA2 results will support it. Yes, we r relaxing after the last paper today!

Agree with parents shared here, school will know if kid is suitable to keep hcl or not.

For the case of that boy, his p5 results qualified apparently. So he was assigned to hcl by default but parents called up sch to drop hcl. CL HOD called to explain and persuaded parents to stay in hcl class.
I wld say, make best use of the situation given at that moment. -
different school has different practices. Anyone can share how do school normally advise for those taking HCL? Is it via consent form? the parents teacher meet conference is now conducted online and we do not get to speak to the chinese teacher.

How to speak to your kid's HCL teacher, to find out whether your kid is suitable or not, to pursue Upper primary (P5 & P6) HCL ?
Answer.
Parent (Swissclover),
Just write an email to the class HCL, put down your personal handphone number down inside your email, ask the HCL Teacher to call u back directly, when she is free. Write down the list of \" burning \" qns that u want to ask her inside the email, to prep her mentally, if u wish. So that, when Teacher call u back, all your concern(s) are addressed.
The official email address of the subject HCL Teacher, is found on your school's website.
At the end of Primary 4 -
If your kid want to attempt P5 HCL, and parents appeal for it, primary school will still give chance, to your kid.
At the end of Primary 5 -
After spending one whole entire year in HCL, after 4 Terms in school, however,
If the kid
a) does poorly or failed P5 HCL by Term 4 year end, or
b) sat for P5 HCL exam,
but
barely coping with the other 3 subjects, PSLE (English, Maths, Science), then
the primary school Chinese department has the authority to overide and ask the kid to drop P6 HCL (gao hua), for your kid's benefit, to focus on P6 pu-hua instead, so as to improve his (her) overall Total AL score, for the 4 core PSLE subjects.
