Thanks for sharing! He understands the focus is on CL but he wants to continue with HCL so hopefully his SA2 results will support it. Yes, we r relaxing after the last paper today! 🙂
Agree with parents shared here, school will know if kid is suitable to keep hcl or not.

For the case of that boy, his p5 results qualified apparently. So he was assigned to hcl by default but parents called up sch to drop hcl. CL HOD called to explain and persuaded parents to stay in hcl class.

I wld say, make best use of the situation given at that moment.

different school has different practices. Anyone can share how do school normally advise for those taking HCL? Is it via consent form? the parents teacher meet conference is now conducted online and we do not get to speak to the chinese teacher.

          Question.
How to speak to your kid's HCL teacher, to find out whether your kid is suitable or not, to pursue Upper primary (P5 & P6) HCL ?

          Answer.
          Parent (Swissclover),

Just write an email to the class HCL, put down your personal handphone number down inside your email, ask the HCL Teacher to call u back directly, when she is free. Write down the list of \" burning \" qns that u want to ask her inside the email, to prep her mentally, if u wish. So that, when Teacher call u back, all your concern(s) are addressed.

The official email address of the subject HCL Teacher, is found on your school's website.

At the end of Primary 4 -
If your kid want to attempt P5 HCL, and parents appeal for it, primary school will still give chance, to your kid.

At the end of Primary 5 -
After spending one whole entire year in HCL, after 4 Terms in school, however,
          If the kid

          a) does poorly or failed P5 HCL by Term 4 year end, or

          b) sat for P5 HCL exam,
          but
barely coping with the other 3 subjects, PSLE (English, Maths, Science), then

the primary school Chinese department has the authority to overide and ask the kid to drop P6 HCL (gao hua), for your kid's benefit, to focus on P6 pu-hua instead, so as to improve his (her) overall Total AL score, for the 4 core PSLE subjects.

Not sure of other parents have shared these; advantage post Primary school from taking HCL:

as long it’s a pass for HCL O level,
            - 2 bonus point for O level.
            - need not take Chinese during JC
            - will get to sit for CL O level (end Sec 3), on top of HCL (end Sec 4). And get to choose the best O result among the 2

If don’t take HCL for PSLE and decide whether to take HCL in Sec only after PSLE, I think the criteria something like these(can verify from MOE site):
            - must be too 10% PSLE result
            Or
            - top 30% PSLE result and A for CL

              Thanks for the answer.

have indicated to the form teacher we would like to consult the Chinese teacher.
our kid did not take SA 1/ 2 full exam paper in p3 and p4 due to the covid situation. somehow the weighted assessments taken in p4 qualified for HCL in P5.

will evaluate after we receive the SA2 results.

                Yes.

To add, for students in sch with affiliation bonus points, hcl wld not be so critical.

Not sure if this is accurate. In some express sec schs, hcl can be offered to students even though they didn't get AL2 for CL.

I think Affiliation bonus can be used together with HCL bonus. It is especially useful when CCA can’t get 2 points. Then can use affiliation plus HLC bonus instead.

And HCL bonus offers more flexibility than affiliation bonus. Former can be use in any JCs admission whereas latter only for that 1 affiliated JC

Depending on the type of students, for many, 2 cca pts + 2 affiliation points, max 4 points deduction is more realistic.

Taking CL for 6 months in JC 1 is not too bad.

Hcl bonus points is not applicable for poly path too.

We are talking about different types of students definitely.

                      Yes, in some Secondary schools,
to do Sec 1 HCL even if their PSLE results do not qualify,

students need to sit for a proficiency test in Chinese.
If they pass, the Chinese department in these Sec schools still allow them to pursue HCL (Sec 1).

Yes, some Secondary schools do overide Moe PSLE Chinese results released like this, by providing their own school's internal, self administered Chinese Assessment proficiency entrance test.

Yes, if the child has the capacities to do HCL in Secondary, should go for it for its admission advantages and also learning additional language in depth, open up the child mind to more perspectives (that is acquired because of the language structure :
