Besides ongoing issues (like cyber security and environmental related ones), oral/paper 1 topics set by schools tend to be current or past year (usually won’t be more than 1/1.5 yr ago), whereas national exam topics are usually those that have been discussed before during the past couple of years. Thus, I keep a 3 year list which I use as part of the revision with students prior to oral/paper 1 exam.

I find it really strange that the Sec 1A CL textbook only has 3 chapters…is there a lot more “other” (non-textbook) stuff that will be taught (+ tested) in the first semester??

For CL, each Chapter has 3 stories and for HCL, 4. They may not seem a lot but there are quite a lot to cover - besides words/phrases, 技能 & 知识 (writing techniques and concepts) too. For overview of the techniques covered, you can have a look at 学习内容一览表 (before the contents page). Quite often, teachers "skip" 《巩固》- i.e. the 3rd story in each Chapter and assigned it as self-reading material (自读课).
Some of the 技能 & 知识 covered includes - being able to understand, identify and apply techniques like rhetoric approach (metaphor, simile, personification, parallelism, hyperbole) and descriptive writing (through appearance, speech, thought, action) as well as explain their uses/effect (based on relevant passage’s content).
Textbook passage serves as introduction to these 技能 & 知识 - workbook practices + additional school worksheets are key towards strengthening students’ understanding in these aspects (how to apply + adapt accordingly as passage content varies).
Beyond textbook, as @sky mentioned, there’s 实用文 (email writing, /20 marks) in Paper 1 - the closest thing most students would have relatable experience with will be the 4 mark question in 阅读理解二（A组）from PSLE Paper 2 format.
Compo wise, no more 看图作文 (picture compo) too, so time & guidance will be required as well to hone student’s 审题 (question analysis) and 拟故事大纲 (story plotting) skills.
Tests wise, most schools have components such as 填写汉字/词语 (usually student have to write the Chinese character based on han yu pin yin provided) and 成语 (选择/填写/造句) - both of these require self-directed learning as most schools do not have regular 听写 anymore whereas 成语 are not taught in class (either get students to purchase the 135 必学成语 booklet or given in notes form). -

chenlaoshi 好棒！Actually, I'm surprised that the requirements for secondary 普华 description writing & 应用文 are so high, especially when I compare with primary 普华。 From observations, my kid's CL class average for (IP, Year4, mid year) OLevel CL was B3, only a third scored A2 (even though most had much confidence), & heard of just 1 kid in his cohort who could attain A1

It's not easy to fail Olevel CL, but certainly takes immense efforts to ace it

For HCL, the weightage for Paper 1 is even higher (cos compo is /60 instead of /40). It's not easy to fail Olevel CL, but certainly takes immense efforts to ace it

Weightage for Paper 1, Paper 2, Oral, LC respectively:
Pri - 20%, 45%, 25%, 10%
Sec - 30%, 35%, 25%, 10%
Sec (HCL, no LC) - 40%, 40%, 20%.
It's not easy to score very high for compo writing in Sec level, because for narrative, besides descriptive phrases (not the primary sch ones like 急得像热锅上的蚂蚁 anymore
), students have to try and apply the writing techniques and concepts learnt (which I mentioned in my previous post) too. If students attempt 议论文/材料新闻，they need to know the relevant terms (e.g. for eco-friendly related topic: biodegrable 可降解, carbon emission 碳排放) as well as have knowledge about quotes/figures/examples to use as prove 论据 for their argument 论点.
Yes, sky (thanks for considering). My classes are conducted in hybrid manner (had to make such arrangements available cos of all the disruptions previously due to the Covid situation - advantage was it allowed those living far away to join in too).
