See !
wef this year (2023),
if you were to check TKGS all her seven 2023 Sec 3 (born 2008 batch) classes, one by one, did you notice :-
No more Econs subject ?
Gone !
( been removed )
What does this imply ?
This imply that -
the current TKGS Principal (from 2023)
DOESN'T
support Econs anymore,
unlike
the previous (former) Principal,
who supported Econs ?
That's why ...
removed this subject ! -
2023 Sec 4 students (born 2007)
is the LAST batch in this Tanjong Katong Girls' Secondary school, that still offered
Sec 4 Economics.
=============================
wef this year 2023 onwards,
no more offer this rare Sec 3 subject Economics anymore,
as is evident
in this year 2023 Sec 3 ALL her seven classes' timetable :-

Not saying it is good or bad to remove Economics. The two Econ classes were Triple Science + SS/Elective Hist/Geo/Lit + Econs (9 subjects). Per prior discussion, absent MSP/CSP/BI these kids would be forced to put the SS + Elective Hist/Geo/Lit in the R1 slot. Maybe there is support for Econs but something else was deemed more beneficial? Who knows.
TKGS is also adding the NA/G2 stream next year. That may have also been a consideration (or maybe it wasn’t).
There are other triple science classes where the kids only have SS/Elective Hist/Geo/Lit for the R1 slot (8 subjects). So this challenge still exists (to the extent it is a challenge, it may or may not be).
FWIW, the current TKGS Principal has been there since 2019 (AY), so this is her fifth year. The prior principal (now at SOTA) was at TKGS for AY 2012 - 2018 (seven years). -

If Economics is only offered to triple science students, it makes sense that demand for it would have waned. In a triple science combo, there are many subjects that can fit comfortably into the R4 and R5 slots, and provide better synergies with the other subjects compared to Economics, such as: A Math and E Math, Chemistry and Physics, Chemistry and Biology, Physics and A Maths.

If your mother tongue is of a reasonable standard (A1 or A2), that would probably take up one of the R4 or R5 slot, leaving only one last slot for another subject. Unless the intention is to stack subjects so that one can score 9 or 10 A1s, Economics as the odd subject in the 8+1 combination doesn't offer any benefit and serves no practical purpose. Once you start strategising and working for either the L1R5 or L1R2B2 points, Economics deficiency (as a subject offering) becomes very obvious. -

I agree with the above. Interest aside and I hate to make it all about scoring, but playing the averages I'd guess that many of these students (or any other students if put in this spot) would benefit more from a calculation perspective to have another shot at the R1 slot. 9 or 10 A1s is kind of meaningless; I can't do anything with more than 6 of them and having the right combination trumps the total in and of itself.

The only caveat to this (brought up by others elsewhere) is two humanities make sense if both could be A1 - C6 (for example) with equal probability. If one is 75%-90% chance of A1 (or whatever) and the other one is more likely than not to be at B4 (or whatever) or below, then one is probably wasting his/her time with the second humanities. Unless you just want the practice to try and improve.
Anyways, looks like Economics and TKGS is in the rearview mirror
.

Yah, but that would be a discussion about triple science and double science, not economics.

Even if Economics is offered as the 9th subject to a double science student, the argument would have been the same, the rest of the subjects (eg Chem and Phy, Chem and Bio, A and E Math, Physics and A Math) offer better synergy with each other than with Economics. -

Ever since TKGS offered Economics in the past (history),
Econs result was sterling ,
43% scored 5 distinctions above.
Tkgs has to do something.
up to this current year 2023 Sec 4, that is,
the final LAST batch of graduating Econs Sec 4 students,
TKGS made it very clear in her Econs rule All along to all her students that :-
Econs cannot go with \"Triple\" Science Sec 3 subject combination. But, allowed Econs to go along only with \"Double\" Science Sec 3 subject combination.
That means,
whoever Sec 3 pupil want to pursue \"Triple\" Pure Science, you can forget about doing Econs !
Why ?
Because
the \"Triple\" Science combination in itself, is already VERY heavy going. Therefore, if u want to do Econs, then TKGS (school) only allow you to do \"Double\" Science at the very most, if u really so desired Econs, period.
By offering subject Econs,
this was what had made TKGS unique,
a face (school) that stand out from amongst the crowd.
So, from this year 2023 onwards,
TKGS will become just another typical school, like rest of the remaining, balance 100+ Secondary schools in Singapore.
Lost her uniqueness !
The curtain has come down, finished (closed) for Econs.
Sad

2022 student who took econs here…
as far as i know, triple science students were never offered any core subject right from the start, and econs being a core subject would not have been offered to any triple science student
and uhh… i personally thought it was kinda weird that last econs batch would be the 2023 sec 4 batch because my econs teacher, who taught econs from 2020 onwards (i believe),left last year, without finishing the teaching of the last econs batch (2023 sec 4)… so basically these students would have been taught one year by her and then have their crucial year be taught by a relief teacher I believe …
Interestingly enough, the economics results produced by the o level batch has been good ever since that teacher took over, econs wasn’t just a special subject to tkgs,it was also a subject whereby the students could perform rather well in. 100% passes and >95% distinction rate as far as I know…
Also, from what I’ve heard, the sec 2 batches have always had a rather high demand for econs as a subject,it’s a rather popular subject in the school, with many juniors always expressing their interest in it … i highly doubt that the subject is being removed due to lack of demand
Well, the removal of it was a sad thing because I thought it was actually really beneficial ,very useful and I would have loved for tkgs to remain as one of the 4 schools offering the subject in Singapore .(also because the removal seemed weird and sudden to me) but hmm,I guess to the decision makers … removing it was simply the better choice so okie then… too bad we wouldn’t have more juniors in econs … -

not sure about the 2021 results ,but the 2022 ones were in my opinion, rather good
If a subject is removed,
A few reasons why school chooses to do so,
Not enough students to form a class/
Students enrolment is dwindling/
Tkgs Econs result is not ideal.
From TKGS 2021 results, can guess the reason why.
As far as I’ve heard, many juniors have expressed their interest in econs, demand for it should be there.for this current sec 4 batch, geography was removed (if I didn’t remember wrongly)and many switched to taking econs instead so there were 2 econs classes and about 80 students (I think).and then for 2022 sec 4 batch, two econs classes but like 40+ students, either way,I think not enough students wouldn’t be the reason…
2022 econs results was 100% passes and 97% distinction ,I believe that is considered an ideal result …
so hmmm… removing the subject entirely was something really really weird to me…like there were no warnings in advance (I couldn’t tell the demand was dropping, couldn’t tell that the students were performing poorly)
and well, the econs teacher left at the end of 2022,didn’t even finish teaching the 2023 sec 4 batch .. it just seemed really fishy 🤷🏼
️🤷🏼
️But well, time will tell us if it was a good decision or not
