WA is short duration test held during the curriculum hours for that particular subject.
Those kids still have regular exams in schools right? Schools are are allowed to conduct not more than 1 WA per subject per term. I guess that would count as some sort of practice.
Eg: WA Maths 1h+ versus JC Maths exam which require 3h practice.
I would think the only time for a full paper practice would be EOY or prelim exam. -

How about J2, no mid yr too ?

JC2 from 2025 will be affected (JC1 cohort from 2024).
How about J2, no mid yr too ?
There will be no mid-year examinations for students of junior colleges and Millennia Institute (MI) for cohorts entering the schools from 2024, announced the Ministry of Education (MOE) on Wednesday (Mar 1).
The removal of mid-year examinations will not be replaced by more school-based assessments, and JCs and MI must not administer more than one weighted assessment per term, MOE said in a separate press release.

no mid yr for J1 is ok, as they just join, need time to adjust to the extensive depth of subjects

Frankly, I thought the mid yr will help J2 to prep for pre-lim then eventually A level. same thought for Sec 4 students preparing for O , N level, mid yr is a mid check point -

Currently, JC1s have (1) Block Tests; and (2) Promos at the end of the year. The weightage of (1) and (2) differ by school.

So next year onwards, theoretically there could be (1) Term 1 test (2) Term 2 test (3) Term 3 test and (4) Promo exams? -

By 202X (haven’t worked out the math yet), entire generations will have gone through their formal education without mid-year exams. JC is merely the last piece to fall.
For us exam-smart battle-hardened babies, mid year just feels natural. For the rest, suddenly having mid year exams in JC could end up being one of those WTF moments. -

JC2 mid-year exam is a good check point of the progress and areas to improve. With its removal, maybe schools need to consider moving prelims earlier so that there is ample time for improvement (provided all JCs can complete the syllabus early). -
Can do away with JC1 mid-year exam ,
since
O-level results released on 12 January,
announced JC posting by February 1st week,
after that
still got to attend 1st year JC orientation, settle down in your JC, get to know your fellow classmates + class subject Teachers, don’t teach much during this busy orientation period. So, nothing much to test anyway, since nothing much has been taught in Term 1.
But,
MOE should not do away with JC2 mid year exam. This JC2 mid-year exam is crucial,
since
so many IP students never sat for O level exam. To them, this A level exam is their most important exit point, since Sec 1. -

I think nothing much to test in Term 1 since JC1 first school academic lesson is quite late (O-level results release, choose school, posting, orientation, choose subject combination, ...).

Timed practices and topical reviews are important for the students’ own progress check and allow them to focus on improving progressively rather than get a shock by EOY. Our schools should continue to have these. (IMHO) The difference is mainly to reduce peer competition as these will not be recorded officially.
