I applaud her for being frank and authentic, and I always like hearing it from a child's perspective. Even at the work place, how many of us derive our satisfaction from doing well at work, rather than love the nature of of our jobs passionately?

How many of our kids will say the same to themselves or amongst their friends (perhaps they won't have the courage to say this to adults?)

The reality is that most people will not discover their passions by that age, and even if they do, may not have the support or luxury to pursue them.

This part I found worrying (has the culture at RV not changed abit after the incident?)

……A Secondary 4 student who wanted to be known only as Ling said that she will not be changing her choice of subjects when she enters junior college next year under the Integrated Programme, despite the latest changes.

The 16-year-old from River Valley High School said that she still intends to take subjects such as mathematics and economics in junior college.
This is because these subjects tend to be basic requirements for most university courses.

She also said that although these changes aim to reduce emphasis on grades, she will still feel “a self-imposed stress” where she expects herself to reach her academic goals.

“And in school, teachers will still push us to perform well academically so it will still be stressful,” she added.

On whether the changes will encourage her to pursue her interests, she said: “Personally, I don’t have passion for any subject in particular. I feel like passion for subjects comes from performing well in them, so at the end of the day, grades kind of still do matter.”
      ……

Her only hobby or interest is studying for validation from grades?[/quote]

Let's hope she's a minority? If that's her experience for the past 16 years, it may have been well-ingrained. Not that it can't be changed, but it may not be easy.

My friend's son is like that too - when asked what subjects he's interested in, he just says \"I did well in xx, yy\". Whether it's their own natural inclination of something that's been ingrained by parents/school/peers, who knows? His brother doesn't think like that.

The new norm of RP70 will be academically eligible to apply for Law/Med/Dentistry (of cos depends on subject combo). At the same time, we can also expect to see more students with RP70 apply for other courses like Biz Ad and Accountancy etc.

Therefore, we are likely to see a shift in the IGP of many local Uni courses to AAA? If half of the Uni courses may require AAA, will it be like order of choice matters more now?

Last night my DD was telling me, had she belonged to the batch under the new system, she would have changed her studying strategy. She would deliberately get U for Econs (H1) and just focus on doing well for her other 3 H2 subjects! 😂
Haha but the A level certificate won't look pretty :rotflmao:

For a course like Business, you'll never know what they look for in aptitude-based admissions (which more universities and courses are expanding, and now there are fewer direct admission places) - who knows they may look at Economics as one of the indicators if the subject was taken?

Is his brother in the same school as him? If so, then the parent and school factors can be eliminated & boils down to personality.

My son is now taking quite an interest in English Lit. And starting to gain insight on how to answer inferential questions. I credit it to the teachers. Remains to be seen whether can score well or not. And whether a poor grade would turn him off the subject (I dont think so).

Same school till O level, then one went to poly; the one who looks as his grades to indicate interest went to JC. A lot will be personality, I guess. The more compliant personalities will imbibe more of what is expected in society!

Eng Lit is one of those subjects where grades and interest don't always align, I fear. Knowing how to answer the questions matters more for grades. I know people who just have that exam knack, and do well in Lit even though they aren't particularly interested, while those we are interested don't do as well. I love reading, but hate dissecting texts, so taking Lit exams was always very painful (and disappointing, grades-wise).

Currently 2023 mid-year exam is removed for first batch of guinea pigs having NO Sec 4 mid year exam this year. In other words, expect the first batch of guinea pigs not to have J2 mid year exam in 2025.

Piggies born in 2007 are guinea pigs 😂
                Hello sembgal,

                You are absolutely right !

Piggies born in 2007, sat for PSLE 2019, are the guinea pigs batch selected for testing purposes, to kick off this new A-level \"maximum 70 points\" system.

I just called up MOE 5 minutes ago, at telephone number 687-2222-0.

Below are 3 questions, I probed MOE official, over the hotline phone number :-

                Question #1

                1) MOE Officer on the phone line,

regarding the recent changes made to the new A-level University admission in year 2026, is it correct to say that,
students need only to take (study) 3 H2 subjects, that's all ?

Officer's reply (Answer), is below -

                \"Yes, that's correct, Mdm,

                because

the maximum score has now been changed to 70 points maximum for 3 H2, no need 90 points anymore unlike in the past when students took up 4H2 subjects.

Of course, the other compulsory subject is your GP (General Paper), because

GP is compulsory for admission entry into our universities, using their A-level results. So, there you are, u already have 3H2 plus your one single compulsory H1 subject English General Paper, to target for your maximum 70 points.\"

                Question #2

                2) MOE official,

can u help me to confirm,
is it those born in year
                ( 2007 or 2008 ), that is the PIONEERING batch being affected by this new A-level system called \"maximum 70 points\" ?

                MOE official replied,
                \"Please hold the line, Mdm.
Let me double check with my colleague (supervisor), to CONFIRM \" ....

After a while, MOE official on the line came back to me, with this answer (reply) :-

                \"Mdm,

This new A level implementation system will affect all students studying in 1st year JC next year, 2024.

                Hence,
the PIONEERING batch are those born in year 2007, sitting for their GCE O level this year 2023, entering Junior College First year next year (2024), sitting for their A-level in 2025, and using their results to apply for university admission in year 2026. Thus, confirmed that the Pioneering batch affected are students born in year 2007 (piggies), onwards. \"

                Question #3

                3) MOE official,

Suppose I have a friend whose son was born in year 2005, and taking A-level this year (2023). Last year (2022), his JC(1) year end results, not good.
He is a Singapore citizen, so has to serve National Service (NS).

Suppose my friend's son A-level results this year (2023) not good, so he want to re-take A-level exam next year (2024) as a private candidate, in certain subjects.
Can he then use next year 2024 A-level results, to apply for uni admission in year 2026, after he finish serving his NS two years later ?

Answer (reply) from MOE official, below -

                \"Yes, of course !

Your friend's son can take two different separate years' of A-level results, combine them altogether, & apply for university admission, in year 2026\".

Personally for me, if I am an A level student when the new system starts, I would be very excited. 🕺 PW for me will be doing something “crazy” :boogie: but “not wrong”. Such that the tester cannot fault and fail me. For the H1 subject I would do theatre study (got such subject or not Ah?) and play out/discuss/pen down the dramas of life. :stompfeet: :snuggles: :spank: H1 subject and PW can then be my unwinding/counter weights to my stressful 3 H2/ GP . What a balance life. :rahrah: work these way? I will be very disappointed if I mis interprets the new A level system :gloomy:

Isn’t this the same for majority? I hated maths science and languages but has to get A1 to progress beyond. It was not until uni that I really enjoyed my course.

Theatre Studies and Drama is offered only as an H2 subject. I think only a few selected JCs offer it (ACJC, TMJC, VJC).
