I think press releases are for general population where only high level info are shared plus the intended announcement. I believe detailed trial outcome data are passed on within the decision making bodies and maybe shared with the MPs before the parliamentary debate, and not telecast on TV the segments that debating them. we commoners have no access to them.
To be candid, this article itself is not sharing much, a bit generic, unfortunately, to justify the changes well.
There should be some indicators to look at from those trials:
1. Before the change, number of students having tuition for which subjects and and after the change, number of students having tuition and subjects.
2. Statements like \"better pace\" and \"deeper learning\" are not well-supported but these are quantifiable by
a. reduction in teachers on mental health issues
b. reduction in students on mental health issues
c. teachers reduced in OT work
d. increase in students doing more recreational CCA or community activities or better NAFTA results
e. reduction in disciplinary and delinquency cases
f. reduction in absence and lateness of students from school
g. if tuition numbers are status quo or reduced and bite-tests results are better than before, then learning has truly improved in schools.
These would be some indicators that could be discussed in parliamentary debates right? :scratchhead:
However, if the above examples of indicators are not exactly improved, better pace and deeper learning could well be attributed to more tuition.
I am not saying the current confirmed policy changes are not good. I am certain it has its merits to manage the heated stress previously. The article is just not providing enough. -
A mum i know shared, her last yr JC2 boy benefited from reduced exams. Sch gave more practice papers to do immediately after each completed syllabus. Short tests at Mid yr. A 230+ gotten 3As for A level. So mid yr exams are not critical. The boy got more confident. Kids in sec onwards in general want face, want to do well too.

Piggies born in 2007, sat for PSLE 2019, are the guinea pigs batch selected for testing purposes, to kick off this new A-level \"maximum 70 points\" system.
I just called up MOE 5 minutes ago, at telephone number 687-2222-0.
Below are 3 questions, I probed MOE official, over the hotline phone number :-
Question #1
1) MOE Officer on the phone line,
regarding the recent changes made to the new A-level University admission in year 2026, is it correct to say that,
students need only to take (study) 3 H2 subjects, that's all ?
Officer's reply (Answer), is below -
\"Yes, that's correct, Mdm,
because
the maximum score has now been changed to 70 points maximum for 3 H2, no need 90 points anymore unlike in the past when students took up 4H2 subjects.
Of course, the other compulsory subject is your GP (General Paper), because
GP is compulsory for admission entry into our universities, using their A-level results. So, there you are, u already have 3H2 plus your one single compulsory H1 subject English General Paper, to target for your maximum 70 points.\"

is it those born in year
( 2007 or 2008 ), that is the PIONEERING batch being affected by this new A-level system called \"maximum 70 points\" ?
MOE official replied,

After a while, MOE official on the line came back to me, with this answer (reply) :-
\"Mdm,
This new A level implementation system will affect all students studying in 1st year JC next year, 2024.
Hence,
the PIONEERING batch are those born in year 2007, sitting for their GCE O level this year 2023, entering Junior College First year next year (2024), sitting for their A-level in 2025, and using their results to apply for university admission in year 2026. Thus, confirmed that the Pioneering batch affected are students born in year 2007 (piggies), onwards. \"

3) MOE official,
Suppose I have a friend whose son was born in year 2005, and taking A-level this year (2023). Last year (2022), his JC(1) year end results, not good.
He is a Singapore citizen, so has to serve National Service (NS).
Suppose my friend's son A-level results this year (2023) not good, so he want to re-take A-level exam next year (2024) as a private candidate, in certain subjects.
Can he then use next year 2024 A-level results, to apply for uni admission in year 2026, after he finish serving his NS two years later ?

Your friend's son can take two different separate years' of A-level results, combine them altogether, & apply for university admission, in year 2026\".
GP is H1 but it is compulsory subject, can it be used for admission to University without taking H1 Economics?

Taking only 3 H2s - it seems still unclear whether students must still take a 4th content subject (either H1 or H2) even if only 3 subjects are counted (like O levels where some subjects are not counted in the final L1R5) - I think the various JCs will have to make clearer statements about this, and it may well vary across JCs/MI. It may be that all students have to take 4 content subjects even if only 3 are counted. And it's still unclear if the \"contrasting subject\" is still a requirement, whether students take 3 or 4 subjects.
I'm not clear what you are asking in the question about GP and H1 Econs.
For scholarship applicants, I would think that taking more subjects, more H2s, even an H3, would all be plus points. Even if the basic requirement is set at 3 H2s, I would expect that an additional H2 may be seen as a reflection of ability etc, just as achievements in CCA and other areas might be viewed positively. There are many scholarships, some more competitive than others, so it really depends on which scholarships the student is aiming for. -

I recall that
your daughter also born in 2007. She too, will be impacted. Hence, Yes, she must know how to compute the new 2026 A-level score.

It sounds like the 4th contrasting subject is here to stay. It would be better to check with your child’s JC for their official stand on this. But yes, the focus will be on the 3H2 subjects as RP70 takes into account your strongest 3H2 and GP.

GP is definitely included in the calculation of the RP70. You don’t have to include the weakest 4th H1/H2 subject if it doesn’t improve your RP score.
As for scholarships, I have mostly the same views as SlmKhoo. The 4th subject can work in many ways, it can add more colors to the otherwise mundane looking application and also open up more lively interesting conversations. -

In 2026, University admission will be a different ball game where choice matters more towards choice of what to study when more students are able to achieve RP70.
On the other hand, will there be balloting for popular courses such as Medicine, Computer Science etc in future? Will University set a target of top 5% from each JC to be admitted for interview shortlist for popular courses? This is to spread out the students across all JC that all schools are good schools.
I heard to study law, they will take in top 5 from all JCs in Singapore. I read this news previously - Top 5% of students in any JC or MI to be eligible for NUS Law test and interview shortlist

Whatever answer people in this forum give, is only their speculation answer or what they perceive to be. So, whatever people say here, u have to take it with a pinch of salt.
Only NUS + NTU can give u the true answer.
This year (2023), the NUS Open house was just over, 2 weeks ago. Even if u were to ask NUS now, they may not know,
because this new A-level system was only announced recently this month.
Besides,
2026 is ... still 3 years away.
NUS so busy trying to sort out this year's 2023 A-level batch admission, no time to answer your 3-years-later still so far away question in 2026 event (happening).
But next year (2024),
Yes,
u can visit NUS Open house,
bring your child along to the Open House,
ask them this burning question of yours. Next year is a much better, more appropriate time to ask NUS / NTU directly,
because by then,
your child is already in JC(1),
moving one step
closer towards 2025 JC2 A-level. exam.
