But looking from a different view, strength in English, Math Olympiad or Science is also a type of talent. Not everyone has a flair for writing, not everyone can grasp MO well, so these are also talents.
I for many years thought that DSA is for non-academic topics like sports, arts, poetry etc. When they talk about Math/Science Olympiad and English essay writing, I was surprised ! For Math/Science/English they have GE; so I am not sure why they again need DSA ..... anyway, that is the way it is. When I become the Education minister in my next life, I will talk, until then I shut up
GE kids were selected in P3, not all kids who have those specific academic talents were selected. I know of kids who were quite average in their studies but achieve medals for MO because they simply love Math. Kids who love Science beyond what is taught in schools.
So I feel MOE tried to cater for all types of talents including specific academic talents, which is why they removed the general academics ability test. -

Still headache for us parents. Without any WA or SA1, how else will our kids be motivated to prepare for the psle?
DSA should be about special talent and not marks. Hence, removing the SA1 is very apt. It will force popular DSA schools to really look at special talent. Otherwise, they may be just giving more weight to SA1 which is unfair to those kids who have special talent.
To me it appears that schools are combining special talent and marks until now and MOE now clearly shows to them what DSA is about...... and forces them to really look at special talents.
I know some schools still have weighted assessments for P6. Like 15% for term 1 WA, 15% for term 2 WA and 70% for prelim. -

By Prelims it will be too late to fix..
But I also hear that some top schools have started doing papers during school hours.. -

I’m sure the schools will continue to administer the timed practice or exam papers for the children to do. Just that it is not recorded in the report books right?

Ya my eldest got lots of \"non weighted' timed practice papers from school. But you know how kids are like. They will never take the \"non weighted\" exams from school seriously.

They will take it seriously if they want to do well. (Parents can eyeball them, make sure corrections are done. It’s the learning progress that matters.) Progress checks are essential.. so it wouldn’t be a total shock..

My son’s school Timed Practice for the traditional CA1 and another Timed Practice for the traditional MYE.
I purposely didn’t prepare him for the exam. Didnt chase/ Push him. I agreed with my wife to do this social experiment….
We want to prove to him, if we left him with his own ways, this is what he will get. Is he satisfied with such results?
If not, you better work with us. Whatever we are doing, if not for ourselves. It is for his own good… -

What if he comes home with excellent results? It happened to us… and then complacency may set in…
