My dh enjoys driving in US the best . not so many impatient or rude drivers, esp in our neighboring countries .
I won’t drive in Hokkaido in winter , the weather can be v erratic n unpredictable, worst is we dun understand Jap so can’t check weather real time forecast fr radio station in car .
The train n ski bus are quite convenient
Actually, the US is so big with different cities, so it is difficult to say you will get the same experience everywhere. I was in Illinois, and I would drive 150 miles up and 150 miles down from my university to Chicago every weekend for my weekly shot of wonton mee 😂 and it was a pleasant drive of a couple of hours. But when I went up to Boston, the experience was terrifying. Boston is an old town so the roads are small and curvy but people still drove at 90mph around there! :nailbite:

Driving in the snow is problematic only when the salt trucks was not able to cover the roads yet. I was once on the highway which was paved but the wind has blown snow onto a curved road. I was driving past a huge truck when my tires skidded on the snow and the car skidded towards the rear of the truck! My life flashed (not much, still young then 😂 ) before my eyes and I screamed. Somehow, I missed the truck but my car landed 180 degrees inside the middle ditch of the road the separates the roads. The snow was up to my waist and I had to get out via my window!

Long story short, don't drive when it snows. You'll never know what might happen.

We got caught in a snowstorm once when on a higher altitude highway in Canada. It was only early Nov - it was a freak snowstorm that wasn't expected, and we and our rental car were not prepared for such weather (with chains etc). Luckily we were able to get off the highway fairly soon and descend to another, longer, route where it was only raining. Scary!

Hokkaido is a nice place to go during June- Low 20s temperature, flowers and minimal rain!

Have compared a few tour agencies and ASA hokkaido seems the more affordable option 😀
9 June still has vacancies at a great discount!
