      Hi newbieks,

I haven't seen official statistics on % passes for Higher Mother Tongue. The ones related to O-Level that are released by MOE (e.g.: https://www.moe.gov.sg/-/media/files/about-us/education-statistics-digest-2022.ashx) covers:

      https://i.imgur.com/d6K1mDv.jpg\">

Regarding the situation you shared, from what I have seen over the years, the chances of getting at least a D7 is ~85%. A few factors/reasons include:

      - O-Level HCL Paper 2 are generally easier to handle than those set by schools (e.g. passage content are less complicated to understand, less use of difficult proverbs/phrases)

      - D7 allows for marginal failure - i.e. as low as 45 marks; B4 to C5 mark range is from 55-64 marks. To not at least make it for D7 would mean a drop of at least 20 out of 200 marks (Paper 1, Paper 2 and Oral) - that would be rather \"catastrophic\" 😓
      so far,
MOE (SEAB) had never published any statistics (data) by year,

what's the percentage of O-level (Higher Chinese) students, who scored at least minimum a B3 and above, in their HCL.

        Thanks for sharing this link!

What is interesting to me is that:

On Page 74, it shows the % of A level students who passed MTL at H1 level. Seems like it is as spectacularly high as those who passed O level MTL.

Sec 1 Express Chinese - I managed to find a free online website with a few schools’ exam papers:

                https://freechinesematerials.com/

I noticed that some commonly-asked question types (new vs primary school CL) are:
                1a) 找出这篇文章的线索
                1b) 文章的主题是什么?
                2a) 从文中找出一个比喻句
                2b) 这个比喻句的作用是什么?

These skills are taught in Chapters 1 & 2 of the CL textbook.

Unfortunately the above exam papers dont come with answer key, so I am asking for help here as i’m coaching my kid myself.

For the qn find the 比喻句, this is asking for the simile, right?

I saw 2 similes in the compre passage, I would have picked either of them:

                  “墙上的钟表走得像蜗牛一样慢” and

                  ”像一只出笼的小鸟,迫不及待地跑出房间”

                  However, my son picked:

                  ”手机成了我的玩伴”

Isn’t this a personification rather than simile?

Just trying to understand whether his answer is acceptable. Will they be learning the difference later on?

I think the ones you picked are 比喻,the one your son picked is 比拟。 difference is 比喻state out the 2 objects in comparison, 比拟 does not explicitly state out the 2nd object .

Another common Compre qn type that is “new” (usually the final qn):

                        你从文中得到了什么启示 / 学到了什么道理?请举生活中的例子加以说明。
