      Hihi
Recently I have engaged a home tutor for my child who is academic weak. My child is in upper pri & his marks are usually borderline or failing 40plus/100.

This tutor will keep saying to my child how weak he is , how far behind he is from her other students. Keep talking about how smart her other students , saying that all her students are express stream after PSLE. While marking my boy’s work , she will sigh loudly , keep making comment. My boy is not showing any behaviour , complete the work given . But he is slower in learning , to tk time understand concepts

I’m extremely upset as it bring fear to my child whenever session is coming .

I’m angry that is it tuition is about scoring high mark rather than helping child to understand better.

I hope parents who engage tutors , pls ask your child what happening during the session if no other family adults in that environment . Do not wish any child has to go through this kind of emotional stress .
If you are not comfortable with the tutor, please go ahead and change the tutor ASAP if your boy is going to be doing his PSLE later this year. Not much time left.

Not all tutors are the same. This one sounds unsuitable for a child who needs more support and coaching. Perhaps her method works for some students? I would terminate her contract asap and find one who has the right approach for your child.

Yup . Already stop the service.

But I’m wondering if this is okay behaviour from a tutor … working with kids smart or not , isn’t it require patience if not why in education industry.

When you start teaching, you will realise quickly that not everybody have the same capability. But then teaching becomes a job, and like all jobs, most people tend to prefer easier ones. So when a student requires more attention than others, it is easy to sigh and complain, as you are going to require more effort.

Is that right? No. Only the best educators are the ones that relish training slow learners. And it is difficult to get these teachers.

In the past, tuition was mainly for the weak students, and most tutors were prepared to coach and teach those students. But nowadays, so many students get tuition that I think some tutors are just academic babysitters - supervising, scolding, nagging etc because the parents pay them to do what the parents are not around to do. Unfortunately, that tutor turned out to be one of these.

sad to hear this. We went thru the same experience when my son was preparing for his PSLE . The tutor was rather strict and flooded him with so much homework that he lost interest in learning. His PSLE results turn out average and now in secondary school . It was a rather bad experience and he would cry and pretended to be sick to avoid going for his tuition.

                  Sorry to hear this.
It terrible how tuition service is changing. I’m angry how the situation is. It like a way to earn money & result is the outcome to show parent . Child is to get result , like a tool.

Maybe can complain about the tutor to CASE or MOE?

I doubt CASE or MOE can intervene. The arrangement between parent and tutor is a contractual agreement between the 2 parties, and they need to agree on the terms. Tutoring agreements are often not in writing, so CASE will not be able to do much as it is likely to be a case of mismatched expectations which were not stated clearly, and will become a I-said-she-said I-thought-she-thought argument. And tutors do not come under MOE. Some parents may actually like the tutor's pressure on kids to perform. It would be best if parents talk to the tutors more in-depth in advance to see if their ideas on what the tutoring relationship should be matches. And maybe have a couple of trial sessions at the start.

Of course, if the tutor performs acts which are deemed cruel or abusive under criminal law, then a report to the police is probably the way to go.
