Paiseh to ask this strange qn. For Oral passage reading, do the examiners actually look at the passage text while the candidate is reading it aloud? Or do they usually just listen (maybe looking at candidate’s expression or other things)?

There is a rubric, to assess Secondary school students for Oral. Your son can refer to this rubric, given out by his class Chinese Teacher, to see how he will be assessed for Oral.

Yes, the examiners will look at the text - but not all the time, i.e. there will still be regular eye contact/looking at the candidate while he/she reads (so that they can note the no. of mispronunciation).

While the examiners won't count the exact no. of mispronunciations, they will be able to gauge if pronunciation （语音）：
- 准确
- 相当准确，有一点错误
- 还算准确，有一些错误
- 不准确，有很多错误
and grade them according to the appropriate level（等级）'s mark range.

Thank u so much chenlaoshi. I was worried will have deduction per mis-read word. I did not have the passage on hand (DS held the only copy) so i just listened & heard accurate 4 tones, appropriate pauses, correct rhythm of common phrases, expression & emphasis (but i couldn’t understand some strange pairing of words so i knew he had mispronounced them, albeit with conviction that he’s saying the right thing :roll: ) I hope that is good enough for a pass but of course he should practice more. We are using O level passages cos couldnt find Sec 1 level

I see. Regarding oral passage reading practice materials, cloze passages would be a good source - can use previously completely exercises.

My advice will be to forget about Q3 and Q4. The scope tested for these news discussion and discursive type questions is very broad and more suitable for students who do constant reading (to understand about the topic and provide relevant supporting claims/evidences) and have a fairly good language foundation (to articulate their thoughts) .

Instead, the preparation work for Q5 (narrative) and Q6 (complete the story) are \"easier\" (since all stories will involve characters and incidents) - memorize descriptive phrases for feelings（心理描写）, actions（心动描写）and appearance（外貌描写） + remember to try and include other 描写手法 like speech（语言描写）and rhetoric approaches（比喻 metaphor/simile, 拟人 personification）, if possible.
